Fmily Feud
Breaking News!!
Dropping in to tell you that Toree, from The Craven 5 , and family will be on Family Feud today. If you miss this SOUTHERN family today, be sure to tune in Monday. You never know--MAYBE they will win and be on more than once. Toree is BFF to my dil, Holly. They have known each other since birth and are truly great friends. Holly blogs (sometimes) at Soccer Mom; Toree's spot is The Craven 5. If you hop over to Toree's place you might want to check out this post about her soon-to-be six daughter, Icie-Mae. Icie is friends with our grandson, Spoony. (I suppose "Spoony" and Icie get some of their creativity from their mothers!) :-) Icie, as you will read, is a spunky, creative little girl. Hilarious!

Groundhog Day Musings
That yearly delimma is upon us. It is Groundhog Day! The day we contemplate the question of the season:
Will winter end early
or will we be forced to endure
cold weather a while longer?

People have long followed the predictions of Punxsutawney Phil. Seems today he emerged from his home in the ground and proclaimed:
"As I look around me,
a bright sky I see,
and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!"
Gen. Beauregard Lee, Ph.D., Phil's friend in Lilburn, Ga. did not see his shadow at the Yellow River Game Ranch. So the good folks in Georgia have proclaimed the coming of an early spring! They proclaimed:a bright sky I see,
and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!"

But, WAIT JUST A MINUTE, this is TENNESSEE. So--It doesn't really matter what we see today. We'll have spring, then winter, then spring, then winter agian all the way until. . . Well, probably some cold weather all the way into MAY!

Do You Wear Holiday Fashions? Yes, No, or Occasionally?
What is in your closet?
Do you wear Christmas clothes?
You know--sweaters, sweatshirts, even a little jewelry!

My answer is--Not so much anymore. But you know, I am a retired educator. Teachers, especially elementary teachers, are probably the major supporters of the holiday clothing industry. We have ABC-123, Christmas, Valentine, Thanksgiving, St Patrick's Day... You name it, we have "cute" finery for it.
To tell the truth, I got a little tired of all the holiday wear and slowed down on it the last few years I worked--except for Christmas. Children love to see their teacher, or principal, in a silly Santa shirt. I could not deny them that amazing sight! :-)
So--when I did a major closet cleaning recently I found leftovers hiding in the back. Yes, I really wore these things! Sorry, but you will miss seeing the snowman sweater with the strategically placed tassel on his hat! What was I thinking! Anyway--he went to used clothing heaven (Good*will) several years ago!

Alphabet Soup
Alphabet Soup is brought to you this week by the letter M. If you would like to join in with a list of your own, please go to Seeds From My Garden and let Morning Glory know you are participating.Hm-m-m-m- Let's see, I'm sure there are some things in my life that I enjoy or treasure that start with the letter M. Oh yes, here we go!
1. Memories--I enjoy looking at photos from years gone by. What a flood of memories those pictures can bring. Of course, we can't stay in the world of memories. There are too many things that need to be done, and enjoyed in the present. But it is certainly nice to take an occasional side trip to the past and think fondly of those people, places, events, and things.
2. M and M Candy--Well, almost anything chocolate is totally terrific. This is just one example of chocolate goodness. AND--You know, it "melts in your mouth, not in your hand!"
3. Memes--Blogging is a wonderful hobby, pastime, diversion, etc. I'm glad I stumbled into this wonderful, friendly, sometimes wacky world. Memes help me get to know my blogging friends better.
4. Marriage--I have had an exciting journey for over 38 years with a wonderful man. I never could have expected or imagined the adventures, challenges, and blessings that we have experienced together.
5. Mexican Food--Good eating!
6. Marbles--You play Chinese checkers with marbles. Both of my six-year-old grandsons have recently discovered the game of Chinese checkers. Luke and Spoony are delightful and I love playing this and other games with them. Spoony and I are planning to challenge his brother, Joshua, and Luke to a game when we are together at Christmas.
7. Mail--Snail mail, email, and packages--I love all kinds! Actually, I can do without the Spam and junk kind! :-)
8. Mocha--As in White Chocolate from Starbucks. 'Nuff said!
9. Mattress--A good, comfortably firm one is my preference. Think I'll go find mine and go to sleep soon!

Alphabet Soup--Brought to You By the Letter K
A good way to start the day--or, for a break in the middle of the day--or, even, to end the day. Yes, thinking of things that are good in your life is a just a good thing anytime. Alphabet Soup is the brain child of Morning Glory over at Seeds From My Garden. Go on over and see what she has for you today. I love KNOWING that these K things are in my life and plan to KEEP them around as long as possible.
Kevin--Our younger son. Kevin and his family are delightful! We love all of them dearly! Kevin is also the "money guy" for us. Having a CPA in the family certainly comes in handy at tax time and when we have other money related questions. This is also amusing to his Dad and me. At an earlier time in his life we would never have seen him in that role! I'm just sayin'!
BTW, you can meet his wife, Holly, at Soccer Mom.
Knowledge--I have always loved learning! There were times in my life when others would never have guessed this! I had TOO MUCH FUN! in High School and Freshman year in college for people to see me as a serious scholar! :-) But the learning bug did take hold later--I even went so far as to get a doctor's degree (Ed.D)! I know, I know! Why?! Well, I wanted to. AND--There was a great scholarship attached to it.
Kookies--Yeah, some one who loves knowledge should know how to spell better than that! But kookies (cookies) are good--especially chocolate chip ones.
Kisses--Yep, I can't leave those out. Of course kisses from the husband are nice--but I love those little grandchild kisses, too!
Kicks--I have spent many hours watching little children (sons and grandchildren) kicking a soccer ball. Fun! Fun! I don't get to go to the games as much now, but we enjoy the videos the parents occasionally share with us. Nothing like watching children learn what competition is all about--and how to play on a team.
Kids--Naturally, I love my kids and our grandkids! However, I had a professional career that was dedicated to kids--and knowledge. What a combination!
There are not many things in life more rewarding than watching, and helping, a child learn!

For me, Halloween is all about children having fun. Our neighborhood does not have through streets or a lot of vehicle traffic--just the people who live here. Actually there is no reason for anyone to cut through the neighborhood--You would just end up in the lake on one side or the woods of a restricted reserve and National Historical Landmark on the other. Which, of course, makes it the perfect place for trick-or-treating.
So--I've got to go get the candy ready for the big night! The weather is supposed to be dry and cool, but not cold. Which means--I better be ready for 'em, cause they will be a comin'!

I close the door and turn off the light when it is obvious that all the little ones have gone home to bed. I'm not really into giving candy to older teenagers!

Have You Been to a Pumpkin Patch?
Pumpkin patches are all over Bloggetyville lately. Have you noticed? Children and their parents are looking for the perfect pumpkin. Of course, perfect is in the eye of the beholder. It might be a huge one, or a little one; a skinny one, or a fat one; a bright orange one, or an almost white one. Everyone has their own idea about what is perfect! After you find the perfect pumpkin you have to decorate it. Then the fun really begins!
I haven't been to visit a pumpkin patch this year. Actually, it's been several years since I picked out a pumpkin for carving. However, I realized that I have my very own--albeit small--pumpkin patch.
Here's a cute little vintage Jack 'o' Lantern that I got in the Holiday swap at PEA's this year. Cute little guy isn't he? Standing watch over some tissues--just in case you might need one! They have jacks on them, too!
The guest bathroom would not be well dressed without a little seasonal deco. Right? This fellow as been with me for several years--gift from a friend. He looks sort of friendly/scary when he has a little tea light candle burning inside.

Look carefully--He's there right behind the Chocolate Chip Cookies! Better watch out when you get one--He looks a little sneaky!
Now for some beauty! I believe these are the pick of the patch! The floral wreath was a recent gift from a dear friend. I had the glass vase and the small pumpkins and gourds already. I thought they made a good combination for the dining room table.

Show and Tell--Muffin's Babies--A Picture
Can it be Friday already?!
It is, and that means it's Show and Tell time!

My Show and Tell this week is a pen and ink drawing that hangs in our family room. Of course, it has a story!
When we moved to Tennessee in 1971, Lee worked as assistant editor of Home Life, a magazine which does just what its name implies, supports life in the Christian home. After a couple of years Lee left Home Life and went on to other positions and responsibilities with his employer. However, he did occasionally write articles for that and other magazines.
One of those articles was about our boys, their dog Muffin, and her babies. The name of the article was "Muffin's Babies." Muffin was a border collie mix--probably a little Spaniel and something else. We found her at the Hum*ane Society and she was a sweetheart! We didn't know her background because she was a lost or stray dog. She had been well-trained and was very affectionate--one of the best natured dogs I have ever known. She was about two years old when we got her and she was our dear family pet for about four years.
Muffin died--of kidney failure--not long before Lee wrote the article. Our family had been devastated at the loss of our beloved pet. In the midst of missing Muffin, Lee and I realized that, through her, our boys were learning yet another life lesson. She had taught them so much--joy, caring for someone else, responsibility, and even the birth process.
Lee's article focused on how Muffin had helped our children learn so many things about life in such a natural way. He did not; however, go into detail about how Muffin came to have seven puppies. Seven puppies, that, BTW, I had to find homes for! Here's how that little story went.
Kevin, age three, came in and proudly announced, "I opened the garage door and let Satan in because he wanted to see his friend."
Yes, Muffin and SATAN were friends. Satan was a black lab who had CLIMBED our four foot fence to try to "visit" Muffin. Muffin was in confinement--ahem!--in our garage. Of course I rushed out to the garage. AND, of course, I was too late. A few weeks later we had puppies!
Muffin not only taught our boys lessons, she taught the parents a lesson. As Bob Barker would say, "Have your pets spayed and neutered!" We did!
The artist who did the art work for the article gave Lee his rendering of the picture. I had it framed for Lee's birthday and it hung in his office for several years. Later it came home to hang in our family room. One interesting thing about it is, that even though the artist did not know our boys, he came very close to capturing them in the picture--especially the younger one. It really looks like Kevin at that age.

Are You Ready for Some Football?!!
Are you ready? Here it comes!You do know that today is the day, right?

Well, actually it started several weeks ago,
but those games were just preseason.
It gets SERIOUS tonight!
I just thought I would share a little game our extended family plays during football season--and again during the NCAA Basketball Tournament, and some of them even play during the NASCAR season. I tried that, but February to November was just too long for me, especially since know NOTHING about NASCAR. Well, I do know cars are involved and they go fast, but somehow that just wasn't enough! I sort of dropped out.
My niece got the family started on this a couple of years ago. (Thanks, K)! We have a lot of fun with it. You don't really have to know anything about football and anyone can play. I guess it's OK if you do know something about football. Some of our players seem to think they know a lot! We let 'em play anyway! I think last year we had almost twenty people signed up in at least three states. We also had three generations playing.
The "game" is "Upickem football" It is simply a football pool--no money is involved in our version. It is not complicated like Fantasy Football, which several family members also play. Just pick your teams and wait for them to win! We really enjoy the Trash Talk section where we talk back and forth, share news, and--of course--"trash' the picks others have made. The version we play is online at the Chicago Tribune at http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.profootball.upickem.net,
Anyway--Just thought I would share a way to keep connected, have some family fun, and survive football season!
Now, excuse me, but my little "Granny SizeMom" needs to go make her picks for the week! She will be representing me in the C Family Football Pool this year. Really, I figure I might as well join "em--Cause the football will be punted, passed, and kicked tonight!

This is my first time to participate in Alphabet soup. I've been wanting to since MG started this fun exercise in letter/word matching a few weeks ago. Today seems like a good day for it. Here are some good things that begin with the letter F!

Let's Play the Name Game!
Finally! Today's the day! I told ya'll a few days ago here that it was slow blogging time for me. Things are better now! Thank you, Lord!
So, it's time for me to start catching up on some blogging fun! I have several bloggy things that have been waiting on me to feel like having some fun. It will take several posts for me to take care of all of them. I will take them in no particular order. Today we will have a little name fun!

Chris is the Frazzled Farm Wife. I love keeping up with life on the farm--harvesting, barn raisin's, etc. She also has a great family that is always busy!
Holly is Soccer Mom and one of the most precious women I know irl. She is the wife of younger son, who is sometimes known as Keke, and the mother of Joshua and Spoony! She is a new blogger, who is using her blog to chronicle her very busy family's life. I really don't know how she does all she does!
Susie can be found at Susie's Space. She writes beautifully about the happening's in her family. Earlier this year she wrote a lovely
Midlife Mom, "Minnie", lives at Home on the Range. She is grandmother to two sweet children. I love her stories about Maine, which I think is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I also enjoy hearing about Buddy and MM's other horses. a very interesting place to visit!
Becky is The Butler's Wife. She tells her stories with a dose of humor. She has been busy, busy, busy this summer. I think she is trying to get all her retirement projects done so she can make a new list! :-)
Linda is found at Middle Years. Linda always seems to know just what I need to hear. She writes often inspirational posts, but also tells interesting family and personal stories. Like so many blogging friends, Linda is one of those people I'm sure I would enjoy knowing irl. On top of everything else she lives in Texas--I do love the home country!
Dawn, Just Call Me Grandma Dawn is a relatively new blogging friend! She is, obviously, another grandmother who loves those precious little ones. She also has a connection to the education field, which was where I used to hang out. I'm enjoying getting to know her.
Here's a smile for you! I could stay here sending out smiles for a long time. However, my husband thinks he might like to eat today, and I think I might join him. So, I guess I better go take care of that little detail of life. Hope all of you are having a great weekend!
Susie can be found at Susie's Space. She writes beautifully about the happening's in her family. Earlier this year she wrote a lovely
series about her forty-year marriage to the love of her life, Bill. She also shares lots of pictures. I sometimes feel like I'm sitting right there with her, catching up on what's going on in life.
Midlife Mom, "Minnie", lives at Home on the Range. She is grandmother to two sweet children. I love her stories about Maine, which I think is one of the most beautiful places on earth. I also enjoy hearing about Buddy and MM's other horses. a very interesting place to visit!
Becky is The Butler's Wife. She tells her stories with a dose of humor. She has been busy, busy, busy this summer. I think she is trying to get all her retirement projects done so she can make a new list! :-)

Whew!
Whew!
That Bloggy Giveaway just about wore me out yesterday--
All the running from blog to blog trying to win prizes!
Of course, I didn't get through all the wonderful giveaways.
Then I even tried to visit some of my regular friends
who weren't participating in the giveaway.
Goodness!
I'm worn out.

A Day of Tests
Today I had to make the trek into the big city.
That once a year trek that all women of a certain age must make.
To get that test done.

I was a few months late for mine. It was really bothering me because I am usually very prompt about it. I let life get in the way.
Well, it's done now and I feel pretty good about it. At least the technician did not come back in and take more pictures. Yay!
The one time they had to do that I ended up having to come back and have ultrasound and more pictures done. That time I had a small cyst. It was gone the next year. The doctor cautioned me about caffeine and I really did try to be careful about coffee and soft drinks. This year I will admit to a St*r*bu*cks addiction! The report will comes in a couple of weeks.
Well, it's done now and I feel pretty good about it. At least the technician did not come back in and take more pictures. Yay!

This one is not so difficult. You just lay on the table and "be very still, please." Then it is over and you are on your way--Hoping that the missed calcium tablets will not show up as a problem! I should hear from that one in about a week.
Well, it's over for me for this year--At least I hope and pray it is! How 'bout you? Have you had your mammogram and bone density test. Have you had your gynecological check-up for the year? (I didn't share that one--it was two weeks ago!)

Some Places to Visit
Good Afternoon! I really thought I would get this up this morning, but you know how that goes some days! Hope you are having a Terrific Tuesday!Today I'd like to share several places in bloggyville that I have visited recently. There's a lot going on out there! I have found a few places you might enjoy going to meet new people, have a little fun, learn something, or even win a prize! So here goes--my little list of places I have seen in the last few days that I think you might like to visit.
• First of all--A new blogger to introduce--Holly at SoccerMom is a sweetheart who is just getting started with blogging. She intends to chronicle family events and I'm sure she will have some good ideas to share from time to time. She is a great wife, mom, teacher, cook, etc! I know Holly irl and I know that anything she sets out to do she does with gusto and does it well. Go on over and meet her. I love Holly--AND--The good looking men on her Saturday post are also very near and dear to my heart! I'm sure you'll guess why.
• It's Tuesday, which means sometimes I would be over at Seeds From My Garden or Many Colored Days participating in Woman to Woman. I really recommend that you go over there and read what some lovely ladies have to say about today's topic. This is how Morning Glory described the topic:

Do Civics and Bloglines Go Together?
How About a Little Civics Test!
I found this on someone's blog yesterday. I took the test and copied it to my blog and didn't get the name of the blog. I went back looking for it so I could give someone credit for leading me to it, but I couldn't find the correct blog. Sorry!
It is a pretty cool little test of what you remember from High School Civics! I surprised myself! I guess I did learn something in Coach Lowrance's class! Come on--give it a try! Just click on the question to go to the test. I don't think anyone will revoke your citizenship if you can't remember all the answers! :-)

How 'Bout Those Bloglines, Rolls, and Readers
Thanks for the comments about organizing the blogs you read. Seems like bloglines is the choice for most people. I tried to sign up with them, but we are stuck at the point where I'm supposed to respond to an email they say they sent me. I never got it! So--I am on Blogrolling for now, but I am not sure their service gives me everything I want. I'm still looking. I may try Google Reader. It has a couple of extra perks I might like. And--who knows--bloglines might decide to let me on!
All this internet, computer stuff really makes my head hurt sometimes. Computers are like cars with me. You are supposed to be able to turn them on and they do everything you want! Doesn't always happen that way with me and cars, computers, or any electronics.
As a school principal I was accustomed to finding someone who knew what to do and getting them to do it! I did my own word processing, and my computerized record keeping. I wrote the reports, etc for the district office and the state. If it had my name on it I was writing it. But as for the real techy stuff--I used anyone who knew more than me to get it done.
At one time I was one of the teachers in my school who was on the cutting edge of technology. You know, in the group that wrote the grants and helped choose the computers and other technology that we bought. Technology was not in the District Budget in those days, so we had to find the money ourselves if we wanted any "modern innovations" in the classroom. Of course, that was back in the day when being on the cutting edge meant you knew how to flip the switch on the computer to make it "boot up." Oh! We were So Happenin'!
One time it was actually a plus for me in an interview that I knew how to put bullets in a document. I got the job--Assistant Principal. I mean, REALLY! The principal and I shared a computer--it was in my office. YES, that tells you something about who did most of the computer work that was needed! I LOVED that job--and that principal. But, ya'll, I faked a lot of that computer knowledge--I just acted like I knew what I was doing until I figured it out! :)
Things have come a long way in technology. I can still fake it for awhile on some computer tasks. But, there are still things that just bring that tech headache on. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I plan to figure out the listin', rollin', or readin' of your blogs before long.
Hey--Speakin' of bloglines and such. A member of my irl family has joined us in blogland. I just knew someone would before long! I think there may be a couple more that will come along soon. I'm going to give this sweet one a couple of posts to get going and then I'll send you her way! She is a good writer and should have plenty of stories to tell--Her family will supply her with A LOT of blog fodder!
