Fourth Fun
Indulge me just a minute. I know July fourth is just a memory now--but I have been trying to get this post up for three days! Between Blogger not cooperating and my rusty blogging skills, it just hasn't happened!
So--Have you ever watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 on TLC--a family of eight children (one set of twins and one set of sextuplets)? Kate--the very organized mother--takes lots of pictures. We repeatedly hear her say, "I hate this darn camera!" I think I have the same camera because I am beginning to hear my self repeat that same sentiment.
I have not typically been the family photographer. We have thousands of pictures, but Lee is not in half of them--because he was always the one taking the pictures. Since you can never have too many boxes of random pictures, I have been trying to remember to snap a few pictures.
Of course, being even an amateur photographer requires--first of all--remembering to have the camera handy. Then there is the problem of downloading the pictures occasionally. AND--if the pictures actually get downloaded there's the job of emptying the memory card. You know, so that you can actually put another picture on it! (I know there is internal memory, but I don't trust that)! Then, at last, if all those pesky things happen the camera must actually be picked up at the opportune moments and A PICTURE ACTUALLY TAKEN!! Are you beginning to grasp my level of ineptitude? Whatever happened to simple film and flashbulbs and lining people up to pose?!!!
So--OK--maybe???--I don't really have the same camera as Kate after all. Maybe my photographic problems are all operator error! Whatever, I sometimes find myself without adequate pictures. The past weekend is a fine example! Anyway--just imagine that you are looking at lots of pictures!
I went to M-ville for the Fourth. Foe some reason, involving town history, that little city decided to celebrate the 4th on the 5th. The day did not matter--It was certainly an old-fashioned kind of July 4 celebration.
We went to a parade. It was a typical small town parade full of old cars, new convertibles, pickups, tractors beauty queens, and politicians passing out candy and promises. There was even a small herd of sheep being moved along by a very well-trained dog and his master. Now can't you just see all the pictures I could have taken IF I had remembered to. . .
We hung out on the covered front porch. Cool breezes from the fans and a mostly shady spot make this a good place to sit and talk, dream, and maybe get up and dance! Betcha thought I wouldn't have pictures!
Luke dancing for Wooky!
Luke, Spoony, and Lilah hanging out together on the swing.
Lilah is the family Basset Hound. She and Wooky go everywhere together.
See one--See them both.--Kind of like Spoony and Luke when their families are together.
My apologies to all other family members and friends.
These are the only people pictures from the weekend!
Uh--I told you--I have serious photographer limitations!
Just before our group got to the civic center we got wet! It POURED rain for a few minutes--just long enough to get us SOGGY! No pictures of that--Thank goodness!
What? I can't fool you?! You think I didn't take that picture. . .

Yes, I said, "puppy!" She is about six months old and
is sporting her first "summer cut."

Kevin and Holly provided a great cook-out spread for about 25 people--Hot dogs, hamburgers and all the trimmings. Holly's grandmother, Margaret, made the BEST BANANA PUDDING EVER! Insert mind images of great food and fellowship here. . .
Then we walked about three blocks to the Civic Center for the official city fireworks. It seemed like about four miles because it was UPHILL--BOTH DIRECTIONS--at least it felt like it! I think I was the only one in my generation to make the trek! The others were smarter--They stayed home on that nice covered porch and watched from there!

Hey There! Have a Great Fourth of July!
Happy Fourth of July!!
Hey! Blogging Friends!
I'm on my way back to the blogging world! Thank you for the emails and comments supporting me while I have been dealing with life. I appreciate all of you so much.
I have been busy! Just returned from a trip to Texas! I spent time with lots of precious family members. We had a cousins reunion--How great! I saw cousins I had not seen in YEARS! What fun talking about our parents and the legacies left by them and their parents. My dad was one of eleven children! Therefore, we had lots of stories to tell!
I also spent time with my sister-in-law, Carlene--just the two of us. She and I both said good-bye to our husbands in the last year. It was difficult being at a family gathering without either one of them. She and I talked way into the night. AND--we had a couple of small adventures together---We're not telling!!
I also spent some days with my stepmother and sister. Carol and I had adventures also. I know a lot more about storage now! That girl is the queen of storage solutions! She introduced me to some stores that we don't have here in Musi*ic City. Like IK*EA, The Con*tai*ner Store, and C and Barrell. Fun places!
I do love visiting the Mother Country--but I'm glad to be back home in the Volunteer State. Now I'm making plans for some changes at home--like paintng rooms, etc. There will be lots to show and tell about that, I'm sure.
Today I'm headed to celebrate the fourth with grandchldren-complete with a parade, cooking out, and fireworks!
Oh, I almost forgot--I'm in love! Yep!--My heart has been stolen! She's almost two months old and has the sweetest face! She's coming to live with me before long! I KNOW there will be stories to tell!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!
Happy Valentine's Day!!!!
I hope you are having a great day with the ones you love!
Valentine's day marks a "monthaversary" for my husband and me. We became engaged 468 months ago! Every year he reminds me--usually with a note in my Valentine's Day gift--how many months we "have been engaged." We were married about four months after he gave me that sweet ring. Just in case you didn't do the month math--It's been 39 years! Here we are on the day we married--as we were leaving the church! We were so young!
So what do you do for Valentine's Day 39 years later? My husband had a plan! A few days ago an early Valentine's Day gift was delivered. Lee had ordered fudge and other goodies sent to me from one of our favorite places--Mackinac Island!
YUM! YUM! YUM!
YUM! YUM! YUM!
The gift of candy was a deliciously sweet surprise. However, the memories that this gift brings to mind makes it an even sweeter Valentine treat! We discovered Mackinaw Island in Michigan about ten years ago. It was suggested to me as a good vacation spot by a work colleague. It became one of our favorite vacations retreats. We have been back two times. (BTW--Mackinac is pronounced Mackinaw).
Mackinac Island is a delightful place to visit. Take a minute to take a look online at some of its highlights. You may want to plan a trip! There are no motorized vehicles on the island--only a couple of emergency fire trucks and such. It is an Historical Landmark; some of its buildings and homes date back to Revolutionary War times. During The War of 1812 , the British and Americans fought several battles on the island. I believe the British won those battles. Reenactments are staged at the fort every day. The island gained some noteriety with the 1980 movie Somewhere In Time, starring Christopher Reeve.
The Island provides a peaceful, pretty, relaxing (or busy) place to have some fun. Take your walking shoes because--remember no cars! There are LOTS of horses and bicycles! I sound like I'm being paid for PR. I'm not! It truly is a wonderful vacation spot.
We did not elect to stay at the Grand Hotel.
We traveled to the island by jet ferry. That's a fun way to start the day!
Here we are on the ferry--Off to our island adventure!
As we approached the island we passed Round Island Lighthouse .
We also got a good view of The MIGHTY MAC Bridge
that spans the dangerous stretch of water between
Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
On the island there is plenty to see and do--or you can opt for some peaceful people and creature watching! This is the main street near the waterfront. It takes a little while to get used to seeing so many horses.
There are plenty of horses, carriages, wagons, and bicycles to rent. There are several hundred people who live on the island year round. There are more horses than people!
Actually, my pictures do not really do the horse population justice--There are usually more carriages, surries, etc. on the street. As you travel around the island you see people on horseback also.
Take a look here--Horse drawn lorries deliver goods to stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.
Check out this UPS lorry.
Here are just a few of the sights of the island.
A view of the beach
through a break in a beautiful wooded area.
We have been back two more times. On those trips we made the Mackinac area our base and traveled into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, into Canada, and took several driving tours to see lighthouses. The island was always a highlight of our trips to Michigan.
So--Are you wondering what fudge has to do with all this? When you get off the ferry at the Macinac Island dock the first thing you encounter is a smell. It is NOT the smell of horses--it is FUDGE! There are numerous--and I do mean many--fudge shops on the island. It is a 100 year tradition of the island. Personally, I think they found a good way to cover up the smell of, ahem, the horses! :-) Actually, the fudge is delicious, and what better way to remember a special time with my very sweet husband!

We did not elect to stay at the Grand Hotel.
It is a huge, beautiful hotel that has an illustrious history, including being featured in the movie. It would be a great place to stay--very elegant. We always stayed at less expensive hotels off the island in Mackinaw City (Go figure--the city spells it the way it sounds!) on the banks of Lake Huron. There are some tourist type attractions, including another fort, lighthouse, and reconstructed historical French settlement in Mackinaw City.

Groundhog Day Musings
That yearly delimma is upon us. It is Groundhog Day! The day we contemplate the question of the season:
Will winter end early
or will we be forced to endure
cold weather a while longer?
or will we be forced to endure
cold weather a while longer?
People have long followed the predictions of Punxsutawney Phil. Seems today he emerged from his home in the ground and proclaimed:
"As I look around me,
a bright sky I see,
and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!"
Gen. Beauregard Lee, Ph.D., Phil's friend in Lilburn, Ga. did not see his shadow at the Yellow River Game Ranch. So the good folks in Georgia have proclaimed the coming of an early spring! They proclaimed:a bright sky I see,
and a shadow beside me.
Six more weeks of winter it will be!"
"Muff the EAR-MUFFS
YA'LL.
Beau did not see his shadow.
Look forward to an early spring!!!!"
YA'LL.
Beau did not see his shadow.
Look forward to an early spring!!!!"
If you are not sure you trust these fellows you can find a groundhog near you. Maybe his/her prediction will be just the one you are looking for. Go here to find many more.
Personally, I think I'll just go take a look outside and see what I can see. You can work this little puzzle while I'm gone--
But, WAIT JUST A MINUTE, this is TENNESSEE. So--It doesn't really matter what we see today. We'll have spring, then winter, then spring, then winter agian all the way until. . . Well, probably some cold weather all the way into MAY!
So, instead of worrying about the cold, or wishing for a Spring celebration, I think I'll just get me some hot chocolate and let the weather and seasons do what they will!
Psalm 104:19
The moon marks off the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.
Well, here's my report from Middle Tennessee--
The sun is bright and it is cool--51*.
Hmm, according to Groundhog lore
that would mean any groundhogs
or other critters in my back yard
will see a a shadow.
More Winter!!
Bummer!!

After all, there is THIS to remember:
Genesis 1:14
And God said,
"Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky
to separate the day from the night,
and let them serve as signs
to mark seasons and days and years,
"Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky

Psalm 104:19

and the sun knows when to go down.

Hello to the New Year!
WELCOME
2008!
I'm glad to see the old year go! It brought challenges and sadness. It also brought joy and rewards.
In our family we saw the passing of three very dear people that we loved. My brother, Charles; my husband's mother, Emma; and my dil Audre's mother, Rita all went home. We rejoice that they are with the Lord, but miss them all dearly.
My husband's illness has progressed and given us several challenges. He suffered cardiac arrest in February and, as a result, spent several days in ICU. He is now under care with Alive Hospice. We are extremely happy with the care he receives from his Hospice team. As always, Lee continues to search for God's plan for him. Since his illness took over life in 2005, he has been writing for a volunteer mission project which provides the gospel to many people, primarily in Asia countries. He has not been able to write much lately, but still believes that God has a reason for him being here.
We have also had good things happen in 2007. I discovered the world of blogging. I cannot express my joy in finding a community of women who have blessed me in so many ways. Because of Lee's illness, I retired from a career in education in 2006. It was difficult leaving my job as elementary school principal with busy interaction with hundreds of people every day. I was searching for ways to have interaction with other people while being pretty much confined to home. One day I very innocently wandered into the world of blogging . I found my answer to needing daily interaction with other people! Thank you, God, for the sweet women I have met through this amazing world.
Additionally, I had the great privilege of hosting a Bible study on Monday nights in the fall. That was my solution to missing Bible study at church--bring it to me. What a blessing those women were during those weeks. My attempt to share that on my blog did not work as I intended. It was really a mistake on several levels--I learned from the attempt and will try again sometime. I will be hosting another home Bible study starting in just a few weeks. I look forward to seeing what God does with the group as some of us gather again on Monday nights.
Our children and grandchildren have brought us great joy this year. We love watching all of the grands grow and learn. What an amazing foursome! We love their parents also! I consider all eight of them a blessing. I'm not sure what we did to deserve them, but we thank God for them continually!
I am not a resolution person. I don't make them because there are too many possibilities for not following through. However, I do like having a plan. I learned a long time ago that most plans are better if they are flexible! The last two years have certainly confirmed that. About the time I think I have a good plan going for something, we have a surprise, a challenge, or a roadblock. So, my plans for 2008 are VERY flexible! But here are a few of the things I am exploring for this year.
1. Bible Study--I am planing to get a little more discipline into my Bible study. As a part of that plan, today I started a new devotional book. I look forward to spending a few minutes each day with Jonie Eareckson Tada in her book, Pearls of Great Price. Joni has quite a phenomenal personal story of overcoming difficulties in life. I'm sure I can learn from her. Joni and my husband worked together several years ago when he produced her video-based bible study, Heaven, Your Real Home. I have never had the opportunity to meet Joni, but Lee has a great admiration and love for her and her ministry. I have some other ideas in mind for discipline in study--I'll be sharing as I go along.
2. Bible Study and Interaction--I am going to facilitate a Beth Moore Bible study at my home. We will begin in just a few weeks, using the recently released study, Stepping Up. I had the pleasure of going to part of the taping for this study in late summer, 2006. I'm looking forward to studying with Beth once again via video.
3. Home decor--I'm planning to "freshen up" some of the decor in our house. We have a couple of rooms that need some work. I think I will start with one of the extra bedrooms. I want to make it into a room for the grands to enjoy. They need a place to hang out with games, videos, and--of course--Ella's dolls. I'm thinking of getting rid of the bed and bringing in a sleeper sofa, painting, new curtains, etc. I'll keep you posted on my progress. If I get this project finished, I may tackle some other rooms.
4. Organization--If I were making resolutions I would have my hands full just promising to get more organized! I'm not promising that. However, I do have plans to address some specific organizational tasks; namely family pictures and the garage. Believe me--It may take me all year if I do this right!
4. Knitting--I am teaching myself to knit. Actually I did some knitting back in the day--not much, but enough to know some of the basics. I have been practicing for awhile. I hope to actually choose a project before long. I also am considering dusting off the long dormant, minimal crochet skills I once had. We'll see how this goes. Again--I'll keep you posted!
5. Sewing--I plan to sew a little--I also have dormant skills here. I'm not at all interested in making clothes, but there are some home decor and crafty things I may tackle. This is in the same category as knitting. I have to give it a try to see if I really want to do it. Flexibility!
5. Reading--Of course I plan to READ! That is a must for any year. I always have a book or two in progress.
6. Blogging and Technology--I plan to blog and, at the same time, sharpen some computer skills. There are still some things I would like to be able to do that I have not mastered yet. Most of these tasks involve the every pesky html! ARGHH!
7. Family--Perhaps my most important plan is to ENJOY MY FAMILY. I love having the grands around and doing things with them. I plan to find more time to enjoy being with those precious little people--and their parents are welcome to come along for the fun!
8. Husband--Caring for my husband is my priority during this season of our lives. All these other possibilities and plans must fit around what he needs and our time together. We have shared over thirty-eight years of marriage. I have not forgotten that my vow was to love, honor, and cherish. My plans for doing just that come before all others.
So, as you can see, I want to stay busy and occupied with a variety of useful/productive activities this year! Of course others needs and interests will come along during the year, but for now this should keep me busy. What are you planning to accomplish and enjoy in this brand new year. I look forward to hearing about it as we share via blogs.
Let's remember to take a break for fun occasionally. Here's a little puzzle to get you started.

We have a collection of Nativity scenes and sets. We have collected them from a variety of places. some we have bought ourselves from places we have traveled; others have been gifts. Some of the pieces are actually tree ornaments that we hang on our "Nativity Tree" that is in our living room each year. I shared that tree earlier this week.
The Nativity that I'm sharing today is the first one in the collection. My husband gave it to me Christmas 1971. We moved to Tennessee early that year. We had experienced a lot of change and endured the added grief of losing an infant daughter that year. This was the first Christmas that we would not be with family. We could not travel to be with family because we were expecting another child and the doctor had advised me to not travel. Although we were excited about the coming birth of another child that Christmas was a lonely time for us.
Lee brought this to me before Christmas. It has always been one my most precious Christmas memories.
I put this one on the floor and let the children move the figures around. At first the figures were glued to the wood. They, long ago, came loose Therefore, our two sons and all of their children have played with these figures as they have learned the story of the Baby Jesus. The Baby goes missing for awhile almost every year, but he always turns up! Now there is one wise man missing. I imagine it will show up some where in the Christmas decorations when I least expect it! :-)
This precious picture is of Lee and our oldest son, Greg. Greg was not quite two in this picture. He is the child we were waiting for when Lee gave this Nativity scene to me. His little brother, Kevin, was born not long after the Christmas of this picture. (Yes, I know G looks big for a child who is not yet two--He was! He is a tall man)!

Christmas Tree Treasures--Our Nativity Tree
Morning Glory, who is always thinking of interesting things for us to do, is the hostess for Christmas Tree Treasures. You might want to go on over to Seeds From My Garden and get in on the fun.
Morning Glory has offered some questions/topics to guide us. I have added a couple of subjects to help tell the story of this tree.
We have two Christmas trees. One is in our family room and has all kinds of ornaments on it from angels to Santa Claus and Snowmen. It is the one where we will put the gifts. The family will gather there to share those gifts.
The tree I'm sharing today is in our living room. It is a relatively small tree--at least it is thin. I call it our Nativity Tree. We have been doing this tree for about eight or nine years. I really like having it as a part of our Christmas traditions.
* The tree topper.
This pretty little angel sits atop this tree. She symbolizes the angels who announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds on that night long ago.
* The tree skirt.
I don't use a real tree skirt on this tree. The tree in the family room has a red and green sparkly skirt, you can see when we have the tour-o-homes next week. I keep looking for just the right skirt for this tree and haven't found it yet. I use a combination of a length of fabric that started life as a sheer window curtain and a velvet throw with beaded fringe.
The important "base-of-the-tree" item on this tree is the ceramic nativity set that I put there each year. It sits on top of my improvised tree skirt. It was made by a very good friend and given to me by my husband for my birthday several years ago. Our friend did some remarkable pottery and nativity sets during the time this was his hobby. He has moved on to a more dangerous hobby (He built an airplane and flies it!). We can no longer get these very special items. Putting this in place is one of the highlights of decorating for the season.
* What goes on your tree first?
I don't have a particular item that goes on first. I do put some plain gold ball ornaments on first so I can get them into the center of the tree and near lights so they reflect some of the sparkle. And then the nativity ornaments go on!
•Some of the Nativity-themed ornaments.
All of the ornaments on this tree have to do with Jesus. Some of them are sets that tell all or a part of the story of the Baby's birth. Some are individual ornaments depicting one element of the story. We have collected ornaments when we travel and some have been gifts. They are all treasured.
You may have to take my word for it! (Photography is not my strong point! )These have gold pictures of the three wise men on them. There are several of them on the tree.
This is a sweet little set that has the traditional figures you see in a Nativity scene. I hang them all over the tree. Some people will look and look trying to find all of the pieces. :-)
Of course there lots of angels, some stars, and a few little churches. This is a sampling of the angels on the tree.
• I have some ornaments I save to go on the tree last.
These are olive wood ornaments that we bought in Israel when we were there in 2000 for the taping of the Beth Moore Bible Study, Jesus the One and Only. (My husband was the executive producer for that project and other video-based Bible studies until he retired in 2005). These ornaments are the typical tourist ornaments that many travelers to Israel buy. They are a lovely reminder of a very cherished time in our lives.
• Here is this year's version of the Nativity Tree.
This tree is one we used in an apartment we lived in when our house was being built. It is a "skinny" tree and fits right in this little spot in our living room. I almost replaced it this year, but decided it would go one more time.
