Fourth Fun
So--Have you ever watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 on TLC--a family of eight children (one set of twins and one set of sextuplets)? Kate--the very organized mother--takes lots of pictures. We repeatedly hear her say, "I hate this darn camera!" I think I have the same camera because I am beginning to hear my self repeat that same sentiment.
I have not typically been the family photographer. We have thousands of pictures, but Lee is not in half of them--because he was always the one taking the pictures. Since you can never have too many boxes of random pictures, I have been trying to remember to snap a few pictures.
Of course, being even an amateur photographer requires--first of all--remembering to have the camera handy. Then there is the problem of downloading the pictures occasionally. AND--if the pictures actually get downloaded there's the job of emptying the memory card. You know, so that you can actually put another picture on it! (I know there is internal memory, but I don't trust that)! Then, at last, if all those pesky things happen the camera must actually be picked up at the opportune moments and A PICTURE ACTUALLY TAKEN!! Are you beginning to grasp my level of ineptitude? Whatever happened to simple film and flashbulbs and lining people up to pose?!!!
So--OK--maybe???--I don't really have the same camera as Kate after all. Maybe my photographic problems are all operator error! Whatever, I sometimes find myself without adequate pictures. The past weekend is a fine example! Anyway--just imagine that you are looking at lots of pictures!
I went to M-ville for the Fourth. Foe some reason, involving town history, that little city decided to celebrate the 4th on the 5th. The day did not matter--It was certainly an old-fashioned kind of July 4 celebration.
We went to a parade. It was a typical small town parade full of old cars, new convertibles, pickups, tractors beauty queens, and politicians passing out candy and promises. There was even a small herd of sheep being moved along by a very well-trained dog and his master. Now can't you just see all the pictures I could have taken IF I had remembered to. . .
We hung out on the covered front porch. Cool breezes from the fans and a mostly shady spot make this a good place to sit and talk, dream, and maybe get up and dance! Betcha thought I wouldn't have pictures!

Kevin and Holly provided a great cook-out spread for about 25 people--Hot dogs, hamburgers and all the trimmings. Holly's grandmother, Margaret, made the BEST BANANA PUDDING EVER! Insert mind images of great food and fellowship here. . .
Then we walked about three blocks to the Civic Center for the official city fireworks. It seemed like about four miles because it was UPHILL--BOTH DIRECTIONS--at least it felt like it! I think I was the only one in my generation to make the trek! The others were smarter--They stayed home on that nice covered porch and watched from there!

Just before our group got to the civic center we got wet! It POURED rain for a few minutes--just long enough to get us SOGGY! No pictures of that--Thank goodness!

I'm on my way back to the blogging world! Thank you for the emails and comments supporting me while I have been dealing with life. I appreciate all of you so much.
I have been busy! Just returned from a trip to Texas! I spent time with lots of precious family members. We had a cousins reunion--How great! I saw cousins I had not seen in YEARS! What fun talking about our parents and the legacies left by them and their parents. My dad was one of eleven children! Therefore, we had lots of stories to tell!
I also spent time with my sister-in-law, Carlene--just the two of us. She and I both said good-bye to our husbands in the last year. It was difficult being at a family gathering without either one of them. She and I talked way into the night. AND--we had a couple of small adventures together---We're not telling!!
I also spent some days with my stepmother and sister. Carol and I had adventures also. I know a lot more about storage now! That girl is the queen of storage solutions! She introduced me to some stores that we don't have here in Musi*ic City. Like IK*EA, The Con*tai*ner Store, and C and Barrell. Fun places!
I do love visiting the Mother Country--but I'm glad to be back home in the Volunteer State. Now I'm making plans for some changes at home--like paintng rooms, etc. There will be lots to show and tell about that, I'm sure.
Today I'm headed to celebrate the fourth with grandchldren-complete with a parade, cooking out, and fireworks!
Oh, I almost forgot--I'm in love! Yep!--My heart has been stolen! She's almost two months old and has the sweetest face! She's coming to live with me before long! I KNOW there will be stories to tell!

Carolyn's Legacy--Prayers and Beauty
We said good-bye to our precious Carolyn last week. People, the service was a true celebration of life! I just have to share a little about this remarkable young lady.
Carolyn had an extremely rare form of cancer for almost three years. She had undergone numerous surgeries, several rounds of chemo and radiation, and countless other procedures. She was in remission for several months before the enemy came back with a vengeance. Carolyn endured it all with a stong faith and unstoppable spirit.
Carolyn made a public profession of faith just shortly before she became sick and received the cancer diagnosis. She faced her disease with a faith that you would expect from someone much older who had known the Lord for many years. She was an example for all who knew her. This was obvious at her funeral service when many people shared examples of how she made a difference in their lives. Just listen to this story that was told by the grandmother of another little girl with cancer. What a witness.
Carolyn was in the hospital for almost two months starting in late January. I believe it was during this time that this woman and her seven-year-old granddaughter met Carolyn and her family. The other child (Since I don't know this child I'm going to call her Clare--not the name the grandmother used.). Clare had the same very rare cancer as Carolyn. As I understand it, this form of cancer is not only rare, it is even more rare for girls as young as these two.
Carolyn was often in great pain during this hospital stay. At times she had such pain that she could not stand for her bed to be touched. However, one night Clare was having trouble going to sleep. Carolyn let her crawl up beside her. The girls wrapped their arms around each other and snuggled together.
This sweet grandmother told about sitting in the darkened room listening to the girls talk. Carolyn told Clare that they should pray. According the the grandmother, Clare knew some memorized prayers, but didn't really know how to pray specifically. Carolyn taught the younger girl to talk personally to God and pray about specific things.
The girls did not pray just for themselves. They talked to God about the other children in the hospital. They prayed for those children to have their pain controlled; for God to be with the families, etc. Carolyn taught Clare to look outside of herself to find others who also needed God's care. She taught her to simply talk to God about the things that were important to her at that time.
That story, told at the funeral, made such an impression on me. What a lesson! I have certainly been doing some thinking about my conversations with God.
And the butterfly at the top-- We released butterflies at the graveside service. Carolyn had told her younger brother that her funeral was "going to be fun." In a conversation with my sister about how that could appropriately happen I mentioned a butterfly release. I didn't know exactly what that was, but it sounded pretty and a somewhat "fun." After getting enthusiactic approval from her parents, my sister told me to "go ahead with the butterflies." Huh--I was just brainstorming ideas--but you know how it goes--Sometimes if you have an idea you "get" to do it.
I gladly arranged for it. It was much easier than I anticipated. Some other family members helped with the cost. At the end of the service Carolyn's brother, Jacob, released the gorgeous Monarchs under a beautiful Texas sky.
Carolyn was a "butterfly girl." Actually she loved all animals and God's creations in nature, but she had a special attraction to butterflies. The release was a wonderful way to honor her and her love of God. Lots of people were wearing butterfly pins and clothes adorned with butterflies because they knew about Carolyn's interest in them. What a lovely sight it was! The butterflies were very "people friendly" and were, of course, immediately attracted to all the flowers. I didn't have my camera, but some other family members took pictures of the butterflies. If I get copies off the pics I will share some of the butterfly antics.
BTW--If you have an interest in butterfly releases you might be surprised to find out how easy it is is to find a source. I just goo**gled "butterfly release." I found Vibrant Wings which happened to be very near where we were in Texas. The butterflies were delievered to us the morning we needed them. Most companies Fed*Ex overnight. Kathy gave us excellent service on short notice. She graciously tolerated my anxiousness about everything going well! :-)

Sweet Carolyn
There will come a time that I will post some frivolous, random thoughts about something like cleaning out my refrigerator or taking a walk on a beautiful spring day. Yes, I have started posts about those very topics this week. I also have some great stories about the grands. You may read them some day. This will not be the day.
Today my heart is broken--once again. Beautiful, intelligent, talented, vivacious twelve-year-old Carolyn lost her battle with cancer and went home to heaven. Carolyn is the daughter of my nephew, Jeff; granddaughter of my sister, Barbara. She fought valiantly for two and a half years. Now she is healed and is with Jesus, who she loves! (I posted about Carolyn here. I did not continue to relay information about her progress because of privacy issues.)
I will be traveling to Texas for this funeral--a trip I have made too many times in the past few years. Please remember my family as we--again--remember and honor a loved one, celebrate a life lived well, and rejoice in the power of saving grace.
Please remember Carolyn's sweet family. Her parents and her younger brother could certainly use some prayers for peace and comfort at this time.

Here's a little known fact about my "neck of the woods"--

That's a Snowfall!
That's a snowstorm!
So, you would have thought yesterday that we were going to get a snowfall second only to the one in 1892. The forecast for last night was for at least 3-6 inches, with more to follow today. I'm sure that somewhere in Tennessee someone probably got a good snow. Here? Not so much. Whatever we got has almost melted. The SUN tends to do that to snow! I think our yard may have had an inch or maybe a little more. It did not quite cover all the grass. It was certainly anything but the wild and woolly storm that we heard about ALL DAY YESTERDAY!

Photo Op--OOPS!
Well, we DID get some snow. Actually it was kind of a faux snow! The sun popped out briefly and that ruined the peaceful beauty of the scant ground cover we had. Now it is just patchy and slushy. It was enough snow (and ice on the roads) for school to be cancelled. Lots of happy children and teachers--some of both in my family!I know. I know. Why did they get out of school for just a little snow? It's the SOUTH, ya'll! Those of you who live in the really cold places with snow of the ground for long periods of time don't want to be on our roads when we get snow! Remember we don't have enough of the white stuff to have the clearing equipment/experience that you guys have. It gets cleared and we get on with life pretty quickly. But the first day of it is rough going!
The camera is a challenge to me in blogging. Lee has served as our main family photographer for years. We have always depended on him to bring the camera and actually remember to take pictures. Now that he has turned that responsibility over to me, we have fewer pictures! I am having to discipline myself to know where the camera is and, oh yes, remember to click it at a few appropriate moments!
You would think having the blog would help me get my photography act together. It's a BIG challenge, ya'll! Good thing I don't have to do the whole getting-film-developed thing. That would probably just put me over the edge!

Here's a special birthday puzzle just for you, Luke!
Truly, my family is in the birthday season. You will be seeing birthday greetings several times in the next few weeks. What fun!
Guess what's going on outside our door right this very minute--SNOW!

However, it was gone before I even got up that morning! This time there may be hope for a white landscape tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted! I would love to sit and look out the window at a beautiful snow scene. I don't care to get out in it much--just enjoy the peaceful while beauty of snow--And then I'm ready for SPRING!!

Kevin!!

Weather Report--Storms in Tennessee
Just a quick note to let friends and family know that the horrible storms in Tennessee did not harm us last night. We spent the evening watching on TV as the storm marched across the state, leaving destruction in its path.
It was not until this morning that we realized how really bad it was. I just heard on TV that this is the worst storm in Tennessee--as far as fatalities are concerned--since 1933. I believe the latest fatality count is 26 state-wide and more than 50 across the south.
There was a lot of damage in Sumner County to the north of us--actually just across the lake. Toward the west, Jackson, including Union University, suffered a lot of damage. I think the latest report is no fatalities at the University, but there are some critical injuries. There are other reports from other towns and counties of unbelievable destruction.

We thank the Lord that our family is safe. Please join us in praying for all those who were affected by the storms last night.

What a beauty! I believe she has the long legs to play basketball--or maybe model! :-)Proud parents are Paula and Chris. Paula is my niece. I have a picture of Kaitlynd and her daddy, but Blogger will just not take it! Go figure! Sorry, Chris! I think mom was being camera shy on Katie's birth day! :-)
Grayson Day is the happy big brother.
He is about 2 1/2 years old--and a VERY precious, sweet child.
I understand Grayson calls his sister Katie Baby!
Carlene (my sister-in-law) is the proud grandmother.

Random Thoughts About Household Upkeep!
I realize I'm a little late welcoming Kaitlynd. I'm just having a little trouble staying connected these days. I'm getting there, but resuming blogging has been more difficult than I thought it would be!
This week has been consumed by exciting things like plumbers! Is there a law that says everything in a house falls apart when it gets near the ten year mark?! I have had to call for a plumber three times in the last month!!
YIKES! I think all water and waste carrying pipes and all faucets are working properly now. If they are not, I think this will have to be my solution to the problem now. I mean enough's enough!
I have another task I need to work on now. Have you ever ordered furniture online? It can be quite an experience! Sometimes it works out--sometimes not so much! Well, we just got a new TV. We are enjoying it, but we needed a new console or something for it because we did not want to put it on the wall.
So--because I do not do much store type shopping these days--I grabbed the trusty laptop and went shopping. We chose this as the piece we would purchase. The description promised--"Very little assembly required." I was sure I could handle putting doors on or something simple like that.
One of the dangers of online shopping for large items is delivery time. No problem there--It arrived very promptly. However, this is what it looks like! Uh! Not exactly the right size box for "very little assembly required."
It has been sitting in the middle of the floor (it weighs 300 lbs!) for several days. I left it there while I decided if it was going back or staying here. I just telling everyone to "watch out for my "assembled" TV console."
I have read the directions, reread them, and reread them again. I have decided I can too put this thing together! I'll keep you posted. Maybe It will be under the TV (a substitute table is there now) in time for the SuperBowl--2009!

Catching Up!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!!
I'm a day late, but I hope I can be forgiven.I decided this was a good subject for my first post
after a longer-than-I-planned-for blogging break!
Holly is my daughter-in-law. I love her dearly! She is a creative, talented, intelligent, hard-working, generous, and, godly woman. I believe that God chose her to be my son's wife. Their two sons, Joshua and Spoony, are 10 and 6. They are an active and precious family.
Holly's birthday is the first one of the year for our family. For the adults she is the youngest; Lee is the oldest. Our birthdays march through the year from hers in January to Lee's in July in order of age. I won't tell the ages, but just know that none of us will get younger this year! :-)
Lee and I are so glad Holly is a part of our family. Happy Birthday, Girl!

Lee
Richard is a good friend and former business colleague. In fact, he was Lee's "boss" for several years. He has been a true friend during Lee's illness. He sat with me for hours the day Lee was admitted to the hospital almost three years ago. Since then he has been faithful about visiting. He comes to our home on a regular basis and often brings other friends with him. We treasure his friendship!

I'm back from my little blogging vacation.

I have a lot of catching up to do!
Lee is doing somewhat better now than he was a couple of weeks ago. This week he had a couple of medical procedures here at home. His nurse is one of our favorite people! She comes twice a week and takes such good care of him. This week she saved him a trip to the hospital by being able to take care of a procedure at home She and another nurse worked together to save him a trip that he did not want to make. He is recovering from all that quite well. Energy is still a concern and he is having some trouble with his voice.
However, today he was able to have a phone conversation with a friend in Texas who is also a part of the ministry that Lee writes for--Christ to the World. Lee has been able to do a little work this week on some scripts for that broadcast ministry.
The highlight of his week was probably a
Monday visit from two good friends--
Richard and Aria. they had a good visit reliving past adventures and experiences. As you can see, Lee gave Aria a Tennessee Titans cap. Aria brought Lee a book of maps of Israel.
However, today he was able to have a phone conversation with a friend in Texas who is also a part of the ministry that Lee writes for--Christ to the World. Lee has been able to do a little work this week on some scripts for that broadcast ministry.

Aria is from Israel. He served as a guide and consultant on a trip we were on in Israel in 2000 and again on a trip to Greece in 2002. We enjoy visiting with him when he is in our country on business. What a treat to have a good visit with him!
Richard is a good friend and former business colleague. In fact, he was Lee's "boss" for several years. He has been a true friend during Lee's illness. He sat with me for hours the day Lee was admitted to the hospital almost three years ago. Since then he has been faithful about visiting. He comes to our home on a regular basis and often brings other friends with him. We treasure his friendship!

Lifting Up Sweet Carolyn

Praying for Carolyn

Carolyn tolerated her surgery well and is recovering from the procedure. However, the surgery was not as successful at eliminating the cancer as we had hoped. Please continue to pray that her doctors will be led to the treatment that can provide a cure. We still pray for miracles.
I'm asking all of my blogging friends to pray for this precious little, twelve-year-old girl. Her name is Carolyn--Her mother Adrianne is in this picture with her. Her dad, Jeff is my nephew. Carolyn has a younger brother, Jacob. They live in the Houston, Texas area.
Carolyn has a very rare form of cancer that she has been battling for over two years. For several months she was "cancer-free." However, it returned with aggression about the time school started this year. She will have surgery tomorrow, November 21. This is not the first surgery she has had since the beginning of this journey. This surgery is, of course, a very serious point in her treatment.
Carolyn has fought this battle with great courage and faith. Her family has fought valiantly along with her. However, it has been a long and hard journey. She, her parents, and her younger brother would appreciate your prayers. I am praying for miracles. peace, and strength. Please join me in lifting Carolyn and her family up.

Father and Son
I love watching children learn. I like it even more when the children I'm watching are my grandchildren. AND--I especially like it when they are learning from their parents. Nothing more special! This is one of those times, caught on camera. It is even sweeter because they were doing something for me!
On Sunday afternoons my older son, Greg, normally comes over to visit with his dad so that I can run to the grocery store and have a little time to do some of the things that need to be done. Often, Luke comes with him. The three men have an afternoon together.
This week when I got ready to go, guess what? My car didn't want to go! So--This little scenario took place in our driveway!
"OK. This is how it works."
Luke gets a basic electric current lesson and instructions in how to hold the jumper cable clamps.
"Be careful! Don't let these things touch!"
Greg gave Luke VERY clear instructions about how to hold those cable ends. He was rather vivid about what could happen if they touched. No way was Luke going to let those things get close to each other!
"Stand back while I attach them over here!"
"Oh, I get it, Dad! You're putting power from your truck into Grandmama's car."
"We've got to let it run for awhile.
Let's go back inside and talk to Poppy."
Just a few minutes later I was on my way. They were ready for an afternoon of ice cream, football, and Chinese Checkers (Luke's new favorite game). What great guys!

In the picture above Emma is the youngest child--third from the left. The other children are her sister, WaDena--on the end with the bow.The little boys are her uncles. The two women are her grandmother, on the left, and her mother, standing behind Emma and her sister. Her grandmother and her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1917. Emma was raised by a series of foster parents and relatives.
This picture shows a constant with Lee's mother. She always had her Bible nearby. She read and studied it often. For many years she shared her love of the Lord and His Word by teaching women in Sunday School.
Mother, Grandma, G-Ma--Take your pick! Here she is with the people who love her best! Younger son, Lee is sitting next to her. Standing are: granddaughter, Becky; grandson, Greg; older son , Jack; and grandson, Kevin. Greg and Kevin are our sons; Becky is Jack's daughter.
Emma loved her children and grandchildren! All of them are in this picture except Ella, who was born the next year. (I know there is a picture of a six-month old Ella with G-Ma, but it is hidden in the boxes of Family S photographs. When I find those pictures I will edit to include all!) Standing in the back is Becky, Greg, Jack, and Kevin. Middle row--Connor, standing next to G-Ma; G-Ma, with Joshua on her lap, Lee. Sitting on steps--Isaiah (Spoony) with Nicole, and Luke with Hunter.

Because of Lee's illnesses and G-Ma's increasing frailty, travel has been impossible. The last time we saw her was when we gathered to celebrate her 90th birthday at Thanksgiving, 2004. Of course, Lee cannot travel to North Carolina for the funeral. Greg and Kevin have gone to be with Lee's family.
My mother, Emma, S., passed from this earth to be with the Father about 8:20 CT Thursday morning. She had suffered with pneumonia and other painful ailments during the past several days. We are thankful she is with the Lord and no longer in pain at this time.
Mother would have been 93 next month and had enjoyed nearly 70 years of Bible teaching. Her missions and ministries were many; her love of the Lord supreme.
In addition to my brother, Jack, and me, Mother is survived by two daughters-in-in-law, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Services will be at Cumby Funeral Home in High Point, NC, at 2:00 p.m Sunday. Graveside services will be at 11:oo Monday morning in Bluefield, VA.
Please pray for our family during this bittersweet time of her home-going and the loss of her presence with us.
