Show and Tell--My Red Hutch

It's been several months since I've participated in Show and Tell. In fact, it's been so long I have almost forgotten the rules and guidelines! Maybe I had better let Kelli fill us in on the idea. Here's what she says over at There is No Place Like Home:
"Welcome to “Show and Tell Friday!” Do you have something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, or a treasured collection. Look around your home for something to share; dig through those boxes in your closet if you have to! Share photos and the story that goes with your special item."
Several weeks ago I went shopping in Franklin with a couple of friends. We had a great day! The main purpose of our trip was to find some treasures for my bedroom. I am in the process of making changes in there.
We found this great red hutch/cabinet. Both of my friends said, almost at the same time, "You have to have that!" After several hours of shopping and thinking about it, I had to agree with them. So, here it is--a new treasure at my house.
Yes, it will be in my bedroom. I'm not sure about everything that will be in the room. We did find a wonderful creamy white quilt and shams, a green/gold/cream patchwork throw, and a fantastic black iron bed. I didn't get the bed, but I will probably go back for it. This room is going to be different from anything I have ever had before. I'll be sure to share some pictures when I get it finished--If I can get pictures taken, downloaded, etc. :)
What treasure are you going to share with us today? Hurry on over to Kelli's and get in on the fun!
I'm off to "visit" some of ya'll! Have a great day!

Show and Tell--Maine Blueberry Dishes
Surprise! I am actually going to do a post without a birthday greeting! The birthday break won't last long. There will be another B-day celebration coming up SOON! :-) Today we have other things to do!

Friday is Show and Tell time at Kelli's.
Run on over and sign up for the fun!

Today I'm going to share some dishes. I understand Shannon over at Rocks in My Dryer had a little impromptu dish sharing carnival going on yesterday. I really had planned to do this dish Show and Tell already, but I may go over to Rocks and get in on that fun also.
Anyway--This pottery is made by an artisan in Maine. My husband and I went on several trips to Camden. Maine during the 1990's. Every time we were there, I would end up visiting a little shop that sells pottery and other art pieces from local craftspeople. Every time I visited I bought another piece--or several.

They go well with my blue and green Fiestaware!

Friday Show and Tell--Christmas Village Delight
At any rate, here we are at Show and Tell, because, it is, you know, Friday! If you haven't already, you might want to run over to Kelli's and get in on the fun. It's really not too late--I hope! Kelli is the creative lady over at There Is No Place Like Home.
My treasure for today is brand new!
Several years ago my husband suggested we start a collection. Somehow he had heard about Dept.56 and was fascinated by the idea of a New England Village. We had been on a summer trip to Maine and Massachusetts and were newly in love with that area of the country. So, we made a trip to a local store and picked out a lighthouse as the first building for our village. A tradition was born!
Since then we have added a building every year. Those, and a few figurines, are a cherished part of our Christmas decorations. I will show you the village when we go on the Christmas Tour of Homes with BooMama on Dec. 17. I know you plan on being a part of those festivities!
Anyway--This year we made a selection for the 2007 addition to the village. We chose a Flag Shop. It is very cute and will fit right in. However, that's not my treasure!
After we decided on that building, Lee found this cute print shop/newspaper--The Woodbridge Gazette. He ordered it, also. He knew I would love it. My Dad owned and operated two small town newspapers when I was a teenager. I spent many hours helping out at the Chillicothe (TX) Valley News. Lee was right--I love this delightful little shop!
Now, granted, my dad's place was not an 1801 version of a print shop. However, it was definitely old fashioned compared to today's computerized printing processes. I remember the old linotype machine and printing press. My Dad also hand-set a lot of his headlines and ads.
Take a look at this little "take-a-peek" window in the front of the Gazette.
Can you see the printer hand-setting some type! That could be my Dad--a century and a half later! I will really enjoy including this little print shop in the village this year along with the school, post office, church, lighthouse, etc. that we have collected over the years?
Update on my husband's computer--It has had a MAJOR MELTDOWN! The current prognosis is that it can be revived with major part replacements. It will take a few days. In the meantime we will be sharing or I will have to venture into "the scary room." That would be our home office that gets little use these days. I only go in there when I must. There is no telling what is in there! :-) The desktop computer hides out there. It has been so long since it has been used I don't know if it'll work. I may give it a try. If you don't hear from me for several days, send a search team! :-)

This candle may be a little large--and it definitely needs some greenery!
How about a little sleigh with holly leaves and berries around a candle?

AND--There is a table in our family room...
It will be moved to a spot behind a couch

Now it is a place for displaying pictures of the grands.
At Christmas, it usually has Santas, Snowmen,
and a collection of pictures from past Christmases.
The runner could be a good addition to that display.

Show and Tell--Muffin's Babies--A Picture

Can it be Friday already?!
It is, and that means it's Show and Tell time!
Go on over to Kelli's to get in on the fun.
My Show and Tell this week is a pen and ink drawing that hangs in our family room. Of course, it has a story!
When we moved to Tennessee in 1971, Lee worked as assistant editor of Home Life, a magazine which does just what its name implies, supports life in the Christian home. After a couple of years Lee left Home Life and went on to other positions and responsibilities with his employer. However, he did occasionally write articles for that and other magazines.
One of those articles was about our boys, their dog Muffin, and her babies. The name of the article was "Muffin's Babies." Muffin was a border collie mix--probably a little Spaniel and something else. We found her at the Hum*ane Society and she was a sweetheart! We didn't know her background because she was a lost or stray dog. She had been well-trained and was very affectionate--one of the best natured dogs I have ever known. She was about two years old when we got her and she was our dear family pet for about four years.
Muffin died--of kidney failure--not long before Lee wrote the article. Our family had been devastated at the loss of our beloved pet. In the midst of missing Muffin, Lee and I realized that, through her, our boys were learning yet another life lesson. She had taught them so much--joy, caring for someone else, responsibility, and even the birth process.
Lee's article focused on how Muffin had helped our children learn so many things about life in such a natural way. He did not; however, go into detail about how Muffin came to have seven puppies. Seven puppies, that, BTW, I had to find homes for! Here's how that little story went.
Kevin, age three, came in and proudly announced, "I opened the garage door and let Satan in because he wanted to see his friend."
Yes, Muffin and SATAN were friends. Satan was a black lab who had CLIMBED our four foot fence to try to "visit" Muffin. Muffin was in confinement--ahem!--in our garage. Of course I rushed out to the garage. AND, of course, I was too late. A few weeks later we had puppies!
Muffin not only taught our boys lessons, she taught the parents a lesson. As Bob Barker would say, "Have your pets spayed and neutered!" We did!
The artist who did the art work for the article gave Lee his rendering of the picture. I had it framed for Lee's birthday and it hung in his office for several years. Later it came home to hang in our family room. One interesting thing about it is, that even though the artist did not know our boys, he came very close to capturing them in the picture--especially the younger one. It really looks like Kevin at that age.

Show and Tell--Basketball Player

It's Friday! That means it is time for Show and Tell at Kelli's.
Run over there and get in all the fun!
Run over there and get in all the fun!
Lee was coaching basketball at church in those days. He has always loved that game! He coached a team of one kind or another for almost thirty years. Sometimes it was adults at church; other times it was our children in their leagues, or a high school AAU team.
Of course, our sons caught the basketball bug and both played in high school. Now one of them is a high school coach and the other is coaching his own sons. In the next generation, all three of our grandsons have already played on basketball teams. I'm sure our granddaughter will have the opportunity if she wants to play!
The little Bball player spent many years in Lee's office at work. When Lee retired the little player came home. He now guards the action in our home office.

Show and Tell--BIC1/2
Kelli at There is No Place Like Home, is the host of Friday Show and Tell. You can go over to her place to get the guidelines and get in on the fun!
I've missed Show and Tell for the last couple of weeks.
I'm back and ready to enjoy it again.
This week I'm going to share a simple little box and the story that goes with it.
Part of the story is nostalgic, part is just plain silly!
I found the little mailbox at a craft fair in Maggie Valley. North Carolina about six years ago. We were on a trip with our son, dil, and very young grandson, Luke. I think Luke was about 6 months old at the time. We spent the night in Maggie Valley and enjoyed this craft fair in the middle of town. I found this mailbox with the number 428 on it and knew I had to have it! It is a bank and the PO Box door is an orginal one from an old US post office.
Our family had PO Box 428 for years in the little Texas town where we moved when my Dad, Charlie, married Rachel. My Dad owned the local weekly newspaper. His office/shop was two doors from the Post Office. I worked in the office after school and in the summer. Many times it was my job to go get the mail. So I saw that number a lot. Our mailbox was larger than this one, but I thought it was a good little memento of my family.
The man who was selling these mailboxes told me he could put the number on any box. So, I searched for one that had the combination BIC1/2. I don't mind telling you that combination because that particular Post Office has been replaced and the box with that combination is long gone! Anyway, I settled for FIC. I will tell you in a minute the significance of those letters.
Well--You know I took this trip to Texas last week. During that visit a group of us were at my stepsister's house. Oh! My Word! I have got to do a post on her home before long! Carol is a very meticulous housekeeper. Everything is neat and clean with everything in its place. ALWAYS. She also loves to collect things--Lots of things! I took pictures--You will be amazed! ANYWAY--
I saw this right there on the wall as you start up the stairs. This picture of a mailbox with the number--you guessed it--428--on it. It is difficult to see the number in my photo, but it is there.
I told her about my little mailbox. We laughed out loud. Probably none of the other people there knew why we thought that was so funny. She and I saw the humor immediately.
Here's the silly story--
When we moved to our little town Carol's "Mama." Rachel, and our "Daddy," Charlie, had just married. Therefore, although we had known Carol and her mother for years, we were a new family. There were three girls in the family--my sister Barbara (17), Carol (10), and me(15). Like I say, we had known each other most of Carol's life, but now we were sisters. We were in for lots of firsts.
There were lots of major and important firsts. There was at least one that was pretty minor and unimportant. None of us had ever had a mailbox with a combination. Carol and I came up with the way to remember the combination that I mentioned earlier--BIC1/2. Of course, because we were silly--Barbara Is 1/2 Crazy!
Ha! Ha! Carol and I thought we were so funny! Barbara, on the other hand, was not impressed with our humor. As she told our nephew last week when Carol and I were ROFLOL, "They always picked on me!"
OK--Why did I settle for FIC for the combination of my little memento mailbox? I could not find Barbara Is 1/2 Crazy, but I could have Family Is Crazy.

Show and Tell--A Treasure From My Family

Kelli at There is No Place Like Home, is the host of Friday Show and Tell.
You can go over to her place to get all the up-dated guidelines and get in on the fun!
Last year I retired from a career of thirty plus years as an educator. I declined having a reception in my honor at school because my husband's illness would not allow him to attend. My family wanted to have a celebration, so they planned a party at our house. It was a wonderful afternoon and the perfect blend of people from several different schools where I had worked over the past thirty years.

This week I am sharing one of my most treasured possessions.
It was a gift from my family.

My family wanted to have a celebration, so they planned a party at our house. It was a wonderful afternoon and the perfect blend of people from several different schools where I had worked over the past thirty years.
At the party, my family presented these these framed messages to me. Every one in the family had a part in putting this treasure together. It currently hangs in our bedroom. Every time I look at it I am reminded of the love we share.
Not being a tech expert :-) I have not been able to figure out how to enable you to see the details clearly. So I'm going to show you the way it is displayed in our home and the people who gave it to me.

Each grandchild had a part in making this wonderful gift.
On the left side you see contributions from brothers Spoony and Joshua.
On the right you find the work of the brother-sister team, Luke and Ella.
Spoony, five and beginning kindergarten at the time, drew a picture of me and wrote, "I love Grandmama."
Joshua, nine and in fourth grade, composed a poem for his contribution:

Ella, gave me a beautiful two-year-old hand print and decorated it with vibrant stickers. A princess has to have some pink hearts, you know!

My husband wrote a prayer that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Lee has mentioned several times that I should "Show and Tell" this treasure. I was a little reluctant to, because this prayer is so full of emotion. There is no way that I live up to his remarks--I'm actually somewhat embarrassed to share it. It came from his heart and he specifically requested that I share it this week. Since I always do what my husband asks--ahem--I have shared this treasure.
This is the last part of the prayer--
"Thank you again, Father, for gracing our family with such a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She has been a model of Your grace in all areas of our lives. We love her more than our words can express. Please reward her with a crown of righteousness for being the fruit of the Spirit before us.
In the mighty name of Jesus, amen."

Show and Tell--A Reading Collection
Kelli at There is No Place Like Home, is the host of Friday Show and Tell. She explains it this way:"Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!
Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!"
Yay! It's Friday!
This week I'm going to share another little collection that I treasure.
I shared my small doll collection in an earlier Show and Tell.
I have a couple of other collections on the same set of shelves with the dolls.
Today I'm going to show you what I call my "reading figurines."
Most of these have been given to me by some really fine people;
some I have found myself and added to the group.
in their spot on the shelves in my back hallway.
(Click on the pictures in this post for an enlarged view).
These little Precious Moments figurines were some the first in the collection. The one on the left of the little lady reading to her dog was given to me by my husband. The other one, of a teacher holding a report card, was given to me by friends of my older son when they stayed in our home on a visit to Nashville. I include it in this collection because I certainly assigned plenty of reading grades in my time as a teacher!
This beautiful piece was given to me by my husband several years ago. He said it reminded him of me. I guess he has seen me read more than one book!
This Lladro figurine was given to me by the mother of one of my students about twenty years ago. I have always loved it. It reminds me of the importance of sharing books with children when they are very young.
This little sweetheart was another gift form Lee. He surprised me with her last Christmas. If you have read Cherish...the word! for very long you know about our sweet granddaughter, Ella. Poppy was reminded of her when he saw this little girl enjoying a book.
There are actually a few more figurines in the collection. They are too large for the shelf and are still packed away from the trip from my office to our house when I retired last year. Someday I will find a place for them here at home and they will come out of retirement.
Thank you for stopping by to see my treasures.
There are plenty more great things to see at other places.
Be sure to go to Kelli's to get the links.

Here it is Friday again!
Today I am sharing a brand new treasure!
Sometimes a treasure is in the eye of the beholder.
When I look at this item I behold a true modern day treasure!

The picture above shows my hall closet.
It was a mess. I really should have taken a before picture.
I just didn't think about it.
Now it is a neat place for cleaning supplies and equipment.
It is where I store the new treasure.
The picture above shows my new treasure!
One day I was vacuuming our bedroom.
My husband commented that it seemed to him
that I was just stirring up the dust.
I explained that he was exactly right.
Our old vacuum cleaner, which had never been great to begin with,
was at an age where rearranging dust was about all it did!
The next day Lee was on the internet looking for a new appliance!
Gotta love the internet, girls!
Now our treasure just suctions that dust--and anything else that gets in the way.
I love it! It is truly a treasure!

Poppy's Christmas Treasure
Last year I wanted to give Poppy--also known as Lee, my husband--something special for Christmas. I wanted him to have something he would like, that would have meaning, and would possibly be of some use. That's a tall order under normal circumstances. I have written about Lee's illness in earlier posts, so most of you know that we live a fairly quiet life at home these days. That lifestyle somewhat restricts the kinds of gifts that he might appreciate and be able to use.She explains it this way:"Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!
Poppy's Christmas Treasure
Finally, after much searching and eliminating idea after idea, we hit upon a possibility that fulfilled all the criteria. The whole family could be a part of the gift. After taking with sons and dils we decided to make Poppy a quilt.
At one time I was a sewin' kind of person--at least a little bit. However, I haven't been into that in a long time and didn't feel like I wanted to attempt that as a project. Therefore, I went searching for another way to get this quilt put together. I thought I could probably find something on the web that would help. I would at least need some really good directions if I did end up doing the sewing.
Well! What I found was better than directions! I found a creative lady who takes you through the process of making your quilt step by step. She supplies muslin squares, pens, markers, and directions! After you finish the work on the muslin squares, you choose the color for the remainder of the quilt, mark a chart to show how you want the quilt to look, and ship the pieces back to her. Then--really pretty quickly--the finished quilt arrives in the mail at your house. It's like magic!
Anyway!
Here Lee's Christmas treasure.
He was so surprised!
The children even kept the secret!
Lee shows his quilt to almost everyone who comes to our house.
He says it is the best Christmas present he has ever been given.

This post is the second part of my tribute to him.
BTW--If you are interested in making a similar quilt, there are lots of kits, etc. on the web.
You can G***gle "quilt kits." to find some. The one we used can be found here.
Of course, some of you crafty people can make your own.
But some of us need a little help! :-)

Bible Study Treasure
I was scrambling in my brain for a Show and Tell goody this week. There's been a lot going on in my real world so I had not prepared a Show and Tell post. Some friends came to visit today and brought my husband and me a real treat. Let's see…It's not a trinket, not a piece of jewelery, nor is it an antique. It is new--but a little bit old, too.
This is a copy of A Woman's Heart: God's Dwelling Place. It is the new Bible study with Beth Moore. It is an updated edition of the first Beth Moore Bible Study that was published--way back in 1995. It is an in-depth study of the tabernacle and how God seeks to develop a relationship with his followers. Those of you who have participated in a Beth Moore Bible study know how her profound Biblical knowledge, superb teaching skills, and indescribable humor can lead you through a unique and unforgettable learning experience.
What makes this even more of a treasure is that for months I have been wrestling with the idea of leading a Bible study in my home one day a week. I have considered doing this several times in the past and have always, for one reason or another, decided the time was not right. I have been struggling with the decision again. I had also been considering whether to use one of Beth's studies, and, if so, which one. When our friends came in with that beautiful box today I felt like I had my answer.
It's possible that I will soon be sitting here with my Bible, a study guide, and a DVD as I study, pray, cry, and laugh with Beth and some friends as we consider how the Old Testament account of the building of the tabernacle can impact our lives today. Now, THAT should be a real experience to treasure!

SHOW AND TELL FRIDAY--THE DOLL SHELF
Welcome to Show and Tell Friday! Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!

The little sweetheart above is a Vogue Ginny Doll. These dolls were popular in the 1950s. Some girls collected them the way girls collect American Girl Dolls today. My older sister and I both had one of these dolls. Sis gave me this one several years ago as a remembrance of our childhood. Little Ginny is a precious symbol of my special relationship with my sister.
About eight years ago I was serving as the Assistant Principal of a brand new school. It was a wonderful adventure that I am so glad I had. The staff called me the "Cruise Director" I often had the task of smoothing the waters and helping ease the tension sometimes caused by hard work and the stress of building new working relationships. The office staff gave me the little girl in the red checked dress for Christmas. It has meaning attached to it that I'll just keep in my heart at this time. Just know it is special and I remember that year fondly!
The photo above is yellowed with age. I had prints made for Sis and me when I found this photo in some old family papers. It is the two of us with our Uncle Ed. We lived with him and our Aunt Frankie (my dad's oldest sister) for a year after our mother died. They were an important part of our lives. Uncle Ed was farmer, politician, former teacher, businessman, and a surprisingly loving man. Don't let his arms-folded pose fool you--We were the apples of his eye! Anyway--the subject is dolls! This picture is Christmas, 1953. I am the blondie on the right with my Saucy Walker doll. I don't know what Barb's doll was called, but I think she did something like talk or walk or something as dolls sometimes do! Don't you love my lady-like pose (not!) and those stunning red socks.
Now for the Queen of the Collection! You need a little background information here--Don't laugh! My mother's name was Beulah. Actually it was Bertha Beulah--I know! I know!--What were they thinking! Oh well, at least it's better than her sister--AllieBamah . I am not lying! They were both precious Texas ladies and they loved each other so very much. My mother was always called Beulah and her sister was Bamah.
Anyway, back to the doll. If you are from the South--or have ever traveled in the South you are probably familiar with Cracker Barrel. Several years ago I found this pretty little doll at the Cracker Barrel near my home. Her name is Beulah. It is written on the little card you see attached to her waist. I bought two dolls, one for me and one for my sister. We were going to be together at a family reunion a couple of months later. I knew she would love the doll. We share a doll history as well as sort of half raising each other.
When I got home I realized I had made a mistake. My oldest sister and my brother would be at the reunion , too. I couldn't take just one doll--I had to have two more. Not that my brother played with dolls as a child--I just knew that if all the sisters had one, his family had to have one also. So back to CB I went. Of course they had no more Beulah dolls--just Charlotte and Virginia!
I hunted for those dolls all over the place. There are several Cracker Barrel Restaurants in the general area where I live. I went to every one of them. I didn't trust just calling. I had to look at the card on every doll available myself. Finally, I called the company inSearcy , Arkansas that sold the dolls. No luck! They did not have any more. I decided Barb would just have to have her doll without mentioning it.
Less than a week before I was to go to Texas for the reunion I was in another store--Linens and Things. This is not a store I where I shop often. I just happened to be there with a friend. I was walking around browsing up and down the aisles. Suddenly, I realized I was looking straight at a display of dolls just like Beulah! I couldn't believe it! I started searching the dolls' cards. Charlotte. . .Virginia. . . Amelia. . . Virginia. . . Beulah!!!!!. . .and finally after searching the whole pile of dolls I found TWO!!BEULAHS! They had just what I needed, no more, no less.
I was able to go to Texas with four dolls. My sisters and brother all loved the dolls. My brother shared his with his younger daughter. Kind of silly, I guess--Just little cloth dolls. But to me, my Beulah doll is a reminder of the woman who was our mother. I remember her as a gentle, caring, fun-loving person. She loved us all dearly!
The Beulah doll sits on the shelf, holding court with the other dolls. Each one is a reminder of a special time in my life. They make me smile every time I walk past.

THE DOLL SHELF
A couple of weeks ago I shared the Mary Hartline Doll that my husband gave me for Valentine's Day this year. I decided that as long as I was discussing dolls, I would just go ahead and share the other beauties on the shelf. These dolls have all come to me in some special way and have a special place in my heart. In the picture above you see the entire small collection.
