Remembering
Prayer!
How wonderful that we can share prayer!
I have felt so very lifted up in the last two weeks.

Thank you, friends, for your prayers and your encouraging and compassionate comments on my last post. Thanks, also for those of you who read and commented on Beth and Amanda's post at LPM Blog. This blogging world is truly amazing. How wonderful to have such caring friends in this special community.

My family and I are working our way to our new normal. We are missing Lee very much. However, we know he is well and we rejoice that he is home with the Lord. We are OK. God does not promise that we will not experience difficulties. He does promise to protect us and be with us. In the last days and weeks His love and care-- through the thoughts, words, prayers, and actions of many special friends--has been abundant!

I have wanted to post several times in the past two weeks. It has been difficult to know where to start. Today I have decided to just start. I think I need to "talk" some about the journey of the last two weeks. Today I want to share Lee's Home Going servicewith you. It was a special time for all of us.

This is Lee's eulogy, written by his family, that was printed in the order of service. BTW--Until now I have not shared our last name on this blog. Although I have mentioned that Lee was a video producer for Lifeway,
I have not revealed the names of the people with whom Lee worked. However, I think that now--since so many of you have read the LPM Blog--I'll just go ahead and talk about that just a little bit in this post.

Lee Sizemore

Elza Lee Sizemore. Jr., age 62, went home to be with his Lord on March 22, 2008. Lee leaves, to cherish his memory, his wife of 39 years Myrna Curry Sizemore; son Greg Sizemore and his wife Audré’; son Kevin Sizemore and his wife Holly; and grandchildren, Luke and Ella Sizemore and Joshua and Spoony Sizemore; brother, Jack Sizemore (Charlotte); niece Becky Clary (T.L) and family; sister-in-law, Barbara Curry Seals (W.M); step mother-in-law Rachel Curry; step sister-in-law Carol Bowdish; and many other treasured relatives from the Sizemore and Curry families.

Lee was preceded in death by his father, Elza Lee Sizemore, Sr.; mother, Emma Hay Sizemore; infant daughter, Dawn Marie; beloved brother-in-law Charles Curry; and sister-in-law, Jeannette Curry Anderson.

Lee was born in Virginia, July 12, 1945, to parents Elza Lee, Sr. and Emma Hay Sizemore. He grew up in Tazewell, VA and moved with his parents to Bradenton, FL after graduating from high school in 1962. He attended Manatee Jr. College and the University of South Florida, graduating with a B.A. in English and journalism in 1967. Lee received a Masters in Religious Education from Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX in June of 1969. He married Myrna Curry in Ft. Worth in 1969 and they moved to Nashville in 1971.

Lee’s greatest joy in life was his family. He delighted in being with his sons, and later their wives, and his grandchildren. He was always ready to attend a basketball or soccer game, piano recital, school or church program, or any other event in which one of them was participating. Of all the names and titles he acquired during his life, none were sweeter or more important to him than “Poppy” when spoken by one of his grandchildren.

When he signed up for anything, Lee had a driving passion to be completely committed. He rarely missed any practices or games in which his sons played; he often was their coach. He was involved in various committee and ministry teams at church, often in leadership positions. Certainly he felt the calling to express himself creatively during his 35 years of service at the Baptist Sunday School Board, later renamed Lifeway. While there he served in a number of capacities, starting as assistant editor of Home Life magazine and finishing as a senior producer/editor of multi-media projects.

Lee expressed his desire to be involved in doing the work for which God called him, to the point of saying he did not want to outlive his ability to be involved in some sort of ministry. Even while confined to a bed, he still was able to write and edit pieces for Christ to the World (an organization dedicated to spreading the Gospel around the world). His family believes that God honored his wish to be involved in ministry until the end of his life, and then He graciously and peacefully took Lee home.

Family and friends are meeting together today to honor Lee’s love of the Lord and his life. Pastor, Dr. Poly Rouse, will officiate the service, assisted by Lee’s dear friends Dale McCleskey, Beth Moore, James Shelton, Travis Cottrell, and Dan Arterburn.

Pallbearers are members of the video crew that Lee worked with for many years. They are Rick Simms, Steve Fralick, Tim Cox, Eddie Bellar, Steve Bates, Bill Cox, Danny Ayala, and Steve Goostree. These friends traveled all over the world with Lee. They carried Lee and his wheelchair up many slopes and through many cities. It is only fitting that they carry him on this final journey.

Honorary Pallbearers are the employees of Digital Media Publishing and Publishing Services of Lifeway Christian Resources.

On a personal note, the family wishes to thank the labors of so many people who helped Lee and Myrna during the last three years of Lee’s life. Because Lee required constant supervision, a requirement of all ventilator patients, Myrna was unable to leave the home often. We know God gives grace even in the midst of suffering. The countless phone calls, emails, cards and messages sent by friends, the numerous visits to the hospital and home by the ministerial staff at Hermitage Hills Baptist Church, the frequent visits by friends from Lifeway, and the special efforts made by Jim Johnston, Keith Smyser, Richard Barnes, Kevin Brewer, Betsy Wedekind, James “Doc” Shelton, and Joy and Richard Dodge leave loving memories.

Many other neighbors, friends, and the staff of Glengarry School all provided support in many and varied ways. Be assured that all of these acts of kindness during Lee’s long illness helped boost the spirits of the Sizemore family and Myrna in particular. Please accept a sincere and gracious thank you for your love and support during an emotional season of life for the Sizemore family.

A video memorial to Lee can be found at Making Everlasting Memories by accessing www.mem.com.

The service was just what we wanted it to be. Lee had chosen all the people who participated and all the songs that were sung. Travis Cottrell sang, "Be Thou My Vision." Travis sings at Beth's Events and traveled with Lee and crew many times. A video of this hymn is in the Jesus the One and Only Bible Study. Dan Arterburn, who has been one of our pastor's and a friend for almost thirty years sang Amazing Grace and led the congregation in Worthy of Worship and Victory in Jesus.

Dale McClesky, Beth Moore, and James Shelton spoke about their friendships with Lee, his life, his love of his family, and his witness for Christ. Dale and Beth have been Lee's friends for years--The three of themhave traveled the world together preparing Bible studies so that others can know more of Jesus. James is a dear family friend and a colleague of our son, Greg. Our pastor, Poly Rouse, spoke about the impact of Lee's life on others and offered the plan of salvation which was so important to Lee. We could not have asked for a better tribute to Lee and his life than what these friends offered at this service.

Lee had asked that his friends be involved--and they were. He had asked that we worship God--and we did. He had asked us to rejoice that he was with the Lord--and we did. What a blessing to share this time with family and friends!

Psalm 116:15
Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.

Home to Heaven
Lee,
my sweet, precious husband,
went home to the Lord on
Saturday, March 22,2008.
His funeral will be Thursday, March 27.

He was a man of God,
a loving husband,
a fantastic father,
and a proud grandfather (Poppy).

He was also a brilliant editor, and video producer
who worked tirelessly for the Lord's Kingdom.

He was an example to many
of how to live a grace-filled

and gracious life.

He was loved by many.

We are heart-broken and miss him terribly.

We rejoice that he is with the Lord hed had loved for many years.
We are grateful that he is now healed!

John 14:1-3
1"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
2In my Father's house are many rooms;
if it were not so, I would have told you.

I am going there to prepare a place for you.
3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back
and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
4You know the way to the place where I am going."

Precious Husband
I have written several posts in the last few days. They have been full of random thoughts and things like basketball--March Madness is here, you know. I have chosen not to actually post them because my heart is just not in it at this time. anyway, I decided to come by and let you know what's going on in our lives right now.

Some of you are aware that my husband, Lee, has been in very poor health for almost three years. He is not doing well at this time. The last few days have been very difficult. We are thankful for the miracle that Lee has been with us for the last few years. The doctors did not think we would have him anywhere near this long. Our family has treasured what Lee has called his "bonus time."

Lee is a remarkable godly man. Someday I may share parts of his life story with you. It is quite a story--full of faith, hope, and working for the Lord. We do not understand the journey he has traveled the last three years. However, we know that God is in control and He has a plan for Lee and for all of us who have traveled along with him. This is a very painful time; but, in the midst of it we know we will find peace.

I will not be posting a lot in the near future. I may be visiting you --reading and commenting a little now and then. I will also pop in to leave an up-date on Lee's condition as I have time and energy.

I have just finished the Bible study, Stepping Up, by Beth Moore. It was a rich, interesting, and rewarding study. Because of the current uncertain times in my own journey, I found great comfort from studying the the Psalms of Ascent (120-134)--which were sung by the Israelites on their pilgrimages to Jerusalem. What a blessing I received--just when I really needed some blessings!

Psalm 121, a long-time favorite, has come to mean so much more to me in the past few weeks. In it the Psalmist reminds us that God protects us at all times. What a comforting thought as we move through very uncertain "comings and goings." He is with us.

Psalm 121 (HCSB)
A Song of Ascent

1I raise my eyes toward the mountains.
Where does my help come from?

2My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to slip;
your Protector will not slumber.

4Indeed the Protector of Israel
does not slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD protects you;
the LORD is a shelter right by your side,

6The sun will not strike you by day;
or the moon by night.

7The LORD will protect you from all harm,
He will protect your life.

8The LORD will protect your coming and going
both now and forever .

Another verse I am claiming during this time is Psalm 139:5. Just imagine--God has us surrounded and His hand is on us. He certainly has us covered! Just the assurance I need right now.

Psalm 139:5

You have encircled me;
You have placed Your hand on me.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!!
I hope you are having a great day with the ones you love!

Valentine's day marks a "monthaversary" for my husband and me. We became engaged 468 months ago! Every year he reminds me--usually with a note in my Valentine's Day gift--how many months we "have been engaged." We were married about four months after he gave me that sweet ring. Just in case you didn't do the month math--It's been 39 years! Here we are on the day we married--as we were leaving the church! We were so young!
So what do you do for Valentine's Day 39 years later? My husband had a plan! A few days ago an early Valentine's Day gift was delivered. Lee had ordered fudge and other goodies sent to me from one of our favorite places--Mackinac Island!

YUM! YUM! YUM!
The gift of candy was a deliciously sweet surprise. However, the memories that this gift brings to mind makes it an even sweeter Valentine treat! We discovered Mackinaw Island in Michigan about ten years ago. It was suggested to me as a good vacation spot by a work colleague. It became one of our favorite vacations retreats. We have been back two times. (BTW--Mackinac is pronounced Mackinaw).

Mackinac Island is a delightful place to visit. Take a minute to take a look online at some of its highlights. You may want to plan a trip! There are no motorized vehicles on the island--only a couple of emergency fire trucks and such. It is an Historical Landmark; some of its buildings and homes date back to Revolutionary War times. During The War of 1812 , the British and Americans fought several battles on the island. I believe the British won those battles. Reenactments are staged at the fort every day. The island gained some noteriety with the 1980 movie Somewhere In Time, starring Christopher Reeve.

The Island provides a peaceful, pretty, relaxing (or busy) place to have some fun. Take your walking shoes because--remember no cars! There are LOTS of horses and bicycles! I sound like I'm being paid for PR. I'm not! It truly is a wonderful vacation spot.

We did not elect to stay at the Grand Hotel.
It is a huge, beautiful hotel that has an illustrious history, including being featured in the movie. It would be a great place to stay--very elegant. We always stayed at less expensive hotels off the island in Mackinaw City (Go figure--the city spells it the way it sounds!) on the banks of Lake Huron. There are some tourist type attractions, including another fort, lighthouse, and reconstructed historical French settlement in Mackinaw City.

We traveled to the island by jet ferry. That's a fun way to start the day!

Here we are on the ferry--Off to our island adventure!

As we approached the island we passed Round Island Lighthouse .

We also got a good view of The MIGHTY MAC Bridge

that spans the dangerous stretch of water between
Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

On the island there is plenty to see and do--or you can opt for some peaceful people and creature watching! This is the main street near the waterfront. It takes a little while to get used to seeing so many horses.
There are plenty of horses, carriages, wagons, and bicycles to rent. There are several hundred people who live on the island year round. There are more horses than people!
Actually, my pictures do not really do the horse population justice--There are usually more carriages, surries, etc. on the street. As you travel around the island you see people on horseback also.

Take a look here--Horse drawn lorries deliver goods to stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Check out this UPS lorry.

We took a guided tour of the island in a carriage/wagon.
Our horses were Fred and Wilma.

Here are just a few of the sights of the island.

A view of the beach
through a break in a beautiful wooded area.

A peaceful and private beach.

Lee in front of an interesting
natural bridge rock formation.

We have been back two more times. On those trips we made the Mackinac area our base and traveled into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, into Canada, and took several driving tours to see lighthouses. The island was always a highlight of our trips to Michigan.

So--Are you wondering what fudge has to do with all this? When you get off the ferry at the Macinac Island dock the first thing you encounter is a smell. It is NOT the smell of horses--it is FUDGE! There are numerous--and I do mean many--fudge shops on the island. It is a 100 year tradition of the island. Personally, I think they found a good way to cover up the smell of, ahem, the horses! :-) Actually, the fudge is delicious, and what better way to remember a special time with my very sweet husband!

Well, I was ready to post this when the doorbell rang.
Guess what!

I got one more Valentine's Day surprise!

I told you--the man is a sweetheart!

Catching Up!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!!
I'm a day late, but I hope I can be forgiven.
I decided this was a good subject for my first post
after a longer-than-I-planned-for blogging break!

Holly is my daughter-in-law. I love her dearly! She is a creative, talented, intelligent, hard-working, generous, and, godly woman. I believe that God chose her to be my son's wife. Their two sons, Joshua and Spoony, are 10 and 6. They are an active and precious family.

Holly's birthday is the first one of the year for our family. For the adults she is the youngest; Lee is the oldest. Our birthdays march through the year from hers in January to Lee's in July in order of age. I won't tell the ages, but just know that none of us will get younger this year! :-)

Lee and I are so glad Holly is a part of our family. Happy Birthday, Girl!

Lee

Lee is doing somewhat better now than he was a couple of weeks ago. This week he had a couple of medical procedures here at home. His nurse is one of our favorite people! She comes twice a week and takes such good care of him. This week she saved him a trip to the hospital by being able to take care of a procedure at home She and another nurse worked together to save him a trip that he did not want to make. He is recovering from all that quite well. Energy is still a concern and he is having some trouble with his voice.

However, today he was able to have a phone conversation with a friend in Texas who is also a part of the ministry that Lee writes for--Christ to the World. Lee has been able to do a little work this week on some scripts for that broadcast ministry.

The highlight of his week was probably a

Monday visit from two good friends--
Richard and Aria. they had a good visit reliving past adventures and experiences. As you can see, Lee gave Aria a Tennessee Titans cap. Aria brought Lee a book of maps of Israel.

Aria is from Israel. He served as a guide and consultant on a trip we were on in Israel in 2000 and again on a trip to Greece in 2002. We enjoy visiting with him when he is in our country on business. What a treat to have a good visit with him!

Richard is a good friend and former business colleague. In fact, he was Lee's "boss" for several years. He has been a true friend during Lee's illness. He sat with me for hours the day Lee was admitted to the hospital almost three years ago. Since then he has been faithful about visiting. He comes to our home on a regular basis and often brings other friends with him. We treasure his friendship!

So! Ok!
I'm back from my little blogging vacation.
I'll be seeing you around Bloggityville.
I have a lot of catching up to do!

Lee
A Lee Update
I'll soon be back with my regular
random nonsense! :-)

Lee is doing better! He seems to have improved a little from whatever was going on a few days ago. That's the way it goes around here. He will give me a scare anLinkd then something happens to change things!

This time, I believe the "something" was Lee needed to do a task for the mission organization he does volunteer writing for--Christ to the World Ministries. This organization has an amazing story and ministry! It supplies the gospel message--primarily to Asian countries--through radio broadcasts. There is also an Internet connection--www.christtotheworld.com/. Lee's involvement involves developing and writing radio scripts.

After a particularly rough day during this past week, we got a call asking for Lee to resubmit some of the work he had done. Seems there was a glitch of some kind and they needed new copies. I told our friend who called that I would probably need to do it because I didn't think Lee would be up to it. I had visions of having to search his computer to find what was needed. I should have known better!

Lee insisted he would take care of the task! I think it helped him have something to focus on and gave him the purpose he so eagerly seeks. I told you in my last post that Lee and God make a good team. God lets Lee know when He has a job for him; Lee always responds! This was a relatively small task. However, I think it was just what Lee needed to get over a bump in the road.

I don't want to misrepresent Lee's condition. It is still serious and will continue to be. Although we believe anything is possible with God, we also understand the physical/medical realities of Lee's condition. We feel God has given us more than one miracle on this journey. We are grateful.

Thank you, family and friends, for your continuing prayers. It means so much to know there are people who care for us--quite literally all over the world. What a blessing!

Of course, there are football games to be watched this weekend, so Lee is "busy"!! (The Titans are out of the race now, so today we supported Peyton's team! The Colts lost anyway!)

We continue to be amazed at God's grace and mercy in our very unique daily walk.

I'm Baaaack!
Well, Hello there!
I have been gone
from Blogland
for a few days

I'm glad to be back!

My husband had some medical problems for a few days. Quite frankly, I just didn't have time or energy to blog. I haven't been around to read and comment and haven't written a word of a post in almost two weeks. It is time to get up and started again!

Lee, as most of you know, has a chronic and critical condition that requires him to be on a ventilator. In recent weeks he has had several physical setbacks and difficulties. We ended up at the hospital this past week for a procedure in same day surgery. We have been there many times in the past couple of years. The problem this time was that it all happened at the height of the Christmas Holidays. Therefore, since it was not an emergency room situation, we had to wait a few days to get in for the help he needed. We have been through this before and knew what to expect. We just took care of things at home until Christmas was over and we could go for the relatively simple procedure. We spent most of the day Thursday at the hospital. Everything went well, as expected and we were home by late afternoon.

Lee's health is, as always, fragile; but, we are almost back to what passes for normal at our house. Lee is not full of energy, but he is feeling better. I have almost recovered from the stress (OK--exhaustion!) that I go through when we have one of these situations. Anyway--enough of the pity party! God is good! We are both on the road to feeling better.

We had an early Christmas with our children and had a great time! It turned out to be good that we had planned Christmas early because on Christmas Day we needed a somewhat quiet day around the House of S.

Can you take one more Christmas story? And, NO, I haven't taken Christmas down at my house yet--Read above for the reason! Picture this--

Yesterday I was talking to my sister on the phone. I happened to be sitting on the couch and started looking at the nativity which is still on the coffee table. It is one of the nativity sets that the grands know they can play with gently. I love to see what they do with it--Ella, age three, has been particularly interested in it this year. I kept admiring Ella's latest staging of the birth of Jesus and suddenly realized someone was missing.

Can you see which important person is not here?

Where is Mary?
I searched and searched for Mary,
but couldn't find her in the cast of characters.

I just figured Ella had taken Mary to some other spot in the house. I went on talking to my sister. Later, right after I hung up from our long conversation and was sitting there finishing my cup of coffee, I found Mary.

There she is!
Perched under the TV
in the entertainment center!

I'm not sure exactly what Ella's intent was. However, I do agree--sometimes a girl just has to have some time to herself! ! (Click to enlarge and see just how far Mary is away--by herself!)

Ya'll have a great day!
Try to get a few minutes just for yourself!

I'll be around soon reading, commenting, and catching up!

Show and Tell--A Treasure From My Family
Kelli at There is No Place Like Home, is the host of Friday Show and Tell.
You can go over to her place to get all the up-dated guidelines and get in on the fun!

This week I am sharing one of my most treasured possessions.
It was a gift from my family.

Last year I retired from a career of thirty plus years as an educator. I declined having a reception in my honor at school because my husband's illness would not allow him to attend. My family wanted to have a celebration, so they planned a party at our house. It was a wonderful afternoon and the perfect blend of people from several different schools where I had worked over the past thirty years.

At the party, my family presented these these framed messages to me. Every one in the family had a part in putting this treasure together. It currently hangs in our bedroom. Every time I look at it I am reminded of the love we share.

Not being a tech expert :-) I have not been able to figure out how to enable you to see the details clearly. So I'm going to show you the way it is displayed in our home and the people who gave it to me.

Each grandchild had a part in making this wonderful gift.
On the left side you see contributions from brothers Spoony and Joshua.
On the right you find the work of the brother-sister team, Luke and Ella.

Spoony, five and beginning kindergarten at the time, drew a picture of me and wrote, "I love Grandmama."

Joshua, nine and in fourth grade, composed a poem for his contribution:
Grandmama was a principal
And this was her principle
To help kids learn and grow
So they won't be down low.

Grandmama is great.

There is no debate!

Luke, who was five and had just started kindergarten, did a picture of me and wrote, "I love Grandmama." (I have to mention that Spoony and Luke were not even in the same town when they did their pictures and sentences. I guess great five-year-old minds think alike!)

Ella, gave me a beautiful two-year-old hand print and decorated it with vibrant stickers. A princess has to have some pink hearts, you know!

My husband wrote a prayer that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Lee has mentioned several times that I should "Show and Tell" this treasure. I was a little reluctant to, because this prayer is so full of emotion. There is no way that I live up to his remarks--I'm actually somewhat embarrassed to share it. It came from his heart and he specifically requested that I share it this week. Since I always do what my husband asks--ahem--I have shared this treasure.

This is the last part of the prayer--

"Thank you again, Father, for gracing our family with such a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She has been a model of Your grace in all areas of our lives. We love her more than our words can express. Please reward her with a crown of righteousness for being the fruit of the Spirit before us.
In the mighty name of Jesus, amen."

Ups and Downs in Real LIfe
I haven't left the country and I'm not really on a blogging break. I have been able to find a few minutes to read and comment a little, but I just haven't had time/energy for the writing for a few days. I have a lot to catch up with in a couple of days. Some wonderful people have blessed me with some awards. I feel honored and I will pass them along as soon as I get back to the writing which I promise will be soon!

You know, sometimes real life just demands some attention. Some of you are aware that Lee, my husband, has a disabling condition. He is doing OK. However, we have seen better days. We had what I call an "up and down night," on Monday night. When we are in that mode I feel a bit sleep deprived. Those are the days I don't get much blogging, or anything else, done. Today we are expecting special company. So--again not much time for blogging. Real life has to take precedence.

Just thought I'd let you know--When you don't see me for a few days it is usually because we are going through an "up and down time." Please pray that we will both feel God's presence during these days and nights. I'll see you soon!

Friday Show and Tell

Kelli, at There is No Place Like Home, is the host of Friday Show and Tell.
She explains it this way:
"Welcome to Show and Tell Friday!
Do you have a something special to share with us? It could be a trinket from grade school, a piece of jewelry, an antique find. Your show and tell can be old or new. Use your imagination and dig through those old boxes in your closet if you have to! Feel free to share pictures and if there's a story behind your special something, that's even better!"

Poppy's Christmas Treasure

Last year I wanted to give Poppy--also known as Lee, my husband--something special for Christmas. I wanted him to have something he would like, that would have meaning, and would possibly be of some use. That's a tall order under normal circumstances. I have written about Lee's illness in earlier posts, so most of you know that we live a fairly quiet life at home these days. That lifestyle somewhat restricts the kinds of gifts that he might appreciate and be able to use.

Finally, after much searching and eliminating idea after idea, we hit upon a possibility that fulfilled all the criteria. The whole family could be a part of the gift. After taking with sons and dils we decided to make Poppy a quilt.

At one time I was a sewin' kind of person--at least a little bit. However, I haven't been into that in a long time and didn't feel like I wanted to attempt that as a project. Therefore, I went searching for another way to get this quilt put together. I thought I could probably find something on the web that would help. I would at least need some really good directions if I did end up doing the sewing.

Well! What I found was better than directions! I found a creative lady who takes you through the process of making your quilt step by step. She supplies muslin squares, pens, markers, and directions! After you finish the work on the muslin squares, you choose the color for the remainder of the quilt, mark a chart to show how you want the quilt to look, and ship the pieces back to her. Then--really pretty quickly--the finished quilt arrives in the mail at your house. It's like magic!

Anyway!
Here Lee's Christmas treasure.
He was so surprised!
The children even kept the secret!
Lee shows his quilt to almost everyone who comes to our house.
He says it is the best Christmas present he has ever been given.

The section below is from Kevin's family--
Kevin, Holly, Joshua, and Spoony.

The section shown below is from Greg's family--
Greg, Audre', Luke, and Ella.

The section shown below is in the middle of the quilt.
It has my square, the Poppy square, and
two pictures of all four grandchildren.

We used children's artwork, hand prints, pictures,
and bible verses
to tell Poppy how much we love him.
If you read my last post you know yesterday was Lee's birthday.
This post is the second part of my tribute to him.

BTW--If you are interested in making a similar quilt, there are lots of kits, etc. on the web.
You can G***gle "quilt kits." to find some. The one we used can be found here.
Of course, some of you crafty people can make your own.
But some of us need a little help! :-)

Happy Birthday to You!
Happy Birthday to You!
Happy Birthday to You,
Dear, LEE!
Happy Birthday to YOU!

July 12, 1945
Baby Lee was born in a coal mining town in Virginia.

His Grandmother, known as Ninny,
and his brother, Jack, look proud to have him in the family!

The story is told that Lee's mother loved those curls so much
she had trouble cutting them.

He is a pretty little thing, don't you think?!

Now that's a Hat!

Growing up, Big Boy!

High School Graduation 1962
Lee graduated as Valedictorian!

Lee, the college student, in Florida

Today I wish my dear husband, Lee, Happy Birthday!
He is a great husband, dad, Poppy, and friend!
He loves the Lord, his family, and a multitude of friends all over the world.
His life verse is Matthew 6:33
He lives it daily.

Happy Birthday Lee!
I love you!

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.

Lee's Birthday Tribute will continue
tomorrow at Show and Tell.

I'll be sharing a treasure that belongs to Lee.
Come back and see some modern day photos.

A little Break for Celebrating and Remembering the Past
Well, Hello There!

I didn't really mean to take a Blogging Break. But seems like the real world just crowded the computer out for a couple of days. I guess it was just a little mini-break.

We celebrated our anniversary on Thursday--Not a big to-do, just a sweet day. Lee and I had a steak dinner and later Greg and his family came over for a while. They brought fudge pie! Yum! Kevin called to wish us a happy, happy--They will be visiting in a few days.

Lee sent me a bouquet of daisies--one of the flowers we used in our wedding--and some wonderful chocolate goodies. His gift from me was my anniversary post. We had an agreement of no gifts because we had just made some purchases of things we both wanted. He cheated!

Thank you to all the blogging friends who came by Cherish. . . and read/commented about our wedding and anniversary. We also had several emails from friends and family who read Cherish. . . the word! but do not comment.

Friday was one of those strange days. You know, the kind of day when you start the day with a definite to-do list, or at least a plan? At the end of the day you realize you were busy, busy--but you didn't necessarily complete anything that was on your list. It was all good, but I just didn't have time for the computer. I didn't even put up a Show and Tell post. That's one of my favorite blogging activities, so you know I was busy! I will get around to see most of the treasures from everyone else--I promise!

I love blogging, but the grands win over the computer every time!
Luke and Ella were with us for part of the day yesterday. Then, in the afternoon, one of Lee's childhood friends came for a visit. Lee was about ten and his friend, Gary, was younger when they played together! They have seen each other a few times as adults, but it has been more than twenty years since they spent time together!

The connection that Lee and Gary had in childhood is sort of unique. Gary's grandparents lived near Lee's family in Virginia. Gary grew up in Tennessee, but visited his grandparents every summer. The boys had a summer friendship spent playing back and forth across the street.

Gary's grandmother,
Rose Smith, was Lee's teacher while he was educated at home the first four years of school. He actually went through six grades in those four years--that's another story for another time! I wish I had a picture of Lee and Gary from those days, but in all the thousands of pictures we have I don't believe there is one. However, we do have a photo of Lee and Mrs. Smith from that era. Lee has fond memories of learning with Mrs. Smith as his teacher. Her daughter, Peggy, was Lee's next teacher. Actually, Gary had a copy of this same picture with him when he came to visit!

Teacher and Student
Check our Lee's fashion statement! He claims that he thought he was cool with those jeans rolled up. Look at the hat! I really don't think he would have been picked for a Gap ad! Still--Isn't he a cutey!

After the anniversary day and the visiting day I have returned to the blogging world. I found out some of you sweet people have been really busy! I will post again soon--maybe even later today--to comment on some of the goings on I discovered when I returned. I also have a lot of visiting and reading to do. See ya soon!

June 28, 1969
Today is our anniversary!
Number 38!!

June 28, 1969

We were twenty-three years old. Well, Lee was soon to turn 24. He was a seminary student. He finished his degree two weeks later. I was an elementary school teacher. We were married at the church where we met--in Watson Chapel of University Baptist in Fort Worth. We didn't actually meet at the church, but we were with church friends when we met. We planned and paid for most of the wedding celebration ourselves so it was not an extravagant affair, but it was nice and just right for us. Our families were there along with a few of my college and high school friends, and mutual friends from our church and the seminary. I told more about the ceremony, our unique first meeting and our wedding in a post here.

This is my Daddy, Charlie. I always called him Daddy. I was the youngest of his four children. He had a step-daughter five years younger than me. I was the third daughter he walked down the aisle. My mother died when I was in the first grade. She was not with us for any of our weddings, but I know she would love the family that was founded on that day. Daddy died twenty years later, after a long and difficult Alzheimer's journey.

Lee and his mother smiled for the camera in the pastor's study before the ceremony. Emma is a sweet and dedicated Christian woman. She is 92 years old now and still has her own home. She lives near Lee's brother and his family in North Carolina. When we married, she lived in Florida. I think she thought she was coming to the end of the world when she came to Texas for the wedding! Lee's father had passed away less than a year before we married. I am so thankful that I met him the summer of 1968, just a few weeks before he went home to heaven. I visited Lee's family in Florida and met his parents then. His Dad was a great tease--He called me Tex.

So here we are after the festivities of the evening, ready to leave the church and start our life together. Do you remember how girls always had a "going away dress." and wore a corsage from the bridal bouquet? Look! He has hair and I'm down right skinny! Those were the days!

We were not sure what God had planned for us, but we knew we would do it together. We really were clueless. Which was probably a good thing! If we had known all the twists and turns in our future we would really have been overwhelmed--with the challenges and the unbelievable blessings that were to come our way.

We really have had a very blessed life. I don't mean it has always been easy and we have had no problems. We have had peaks and valleys--some very high peaks, and some extremely low valleys--just like most people. However, God has always guided us through the hardships and celebrated the joys with us.

The two greatest blessings we have had are our sons, Greg and Kevin. The greatest sorrow was the loss of our infant daughter, Dawn Marie. We feel that God led our sons to the wives He chose for them. Audre' (Greg) and Holly (Kevin) are wonderful Godly women. We are so thankful they are in our family. Of course the grandchildren are absolutely the "icing on the cake." Joshua and Isaiah are Kevin's children; Luke and Ella are Greg's. Our family is our most significant blessing, achievement, and reward in life.

We, with the guidance and blessing of God, founded this family in that chapel in Texas thirty-eight years ago today. We may have been somewhat naive and clueless, but God was not. Others may have been skeptical, but God was not. We have definitely made mistakes along the way, but God has not. He always knows what He is doing.

Thank you, Lord, for June 28, 1969 and all the days since.
